Window Tinting - 80/100 series (1 Viewer)

Has anyone out there had additional window tinting added to the rear doors and cargo area windows and has it made a difference in the amount of heat buildup inside the vehicle? Long story short, I have a '99 LC with no rear a/c and I am thinking about having additional window tinting added to the rear. The window tint place of course told me that it would reduce the heat inside the vehicle by 50% because the rear glass in the LC is just colored glass and additional tinting would help. The price is $240.

If you are thinking of rear cargo side windows tailgate and rear passenger window tint, I think the price is high unless it is lifetime warranty towards scratches and fades... I had mine done at Ziebart place for $195 entire vehicle with lifetime warranty tint. Check around.

it has been my experience that tinting does infact greatly reduce the inside temp of the car...the $240 quote does seem kind of high though. I just had a honda civic's tint stripped and totally re-tinted last week for $200 total...and the stripping is the time consuming part.

I called the place back and supposedly this is there top of the line window tint. They are a Formula One Window Tint dealer, this product is called Ultimate 18 and has a lietime warranty. She is sticking with the $240 figure for the back 5 windows.

When I had mine done, I did called around to shop. There are so many tint manufacturer with such a name and warranty. If I were you , I will shop around little bit. If you are time conscious, go for it. I am more towards budget conscious.

I've had Formula One do an Acura TLS and an Audi A6 for me and they did a great job. Their tint holds up very well and their trim is very good, not set back a great deal from the edges of the glass like some places will do. All of their work includes a warranty although I've never had a reason to use it, that's the best way to be though. Just sharing some personal experience with the outfit. Also, if you ever move or anything goes wrong while away from home they are nationwide.

In comparison to a Civic the LC has more windows as the rear sliders are like doing two windows each. $240 seems reasonable to me if it has a lifetime warranty and they will remove it once if you are ever ticketed for having it. Every state has different restrictions. I would have the front doors tinted as well in a lighter shade than the others for that reason. Tinting the windshield is not good as it reduces the clarity and causes eye strain and a ticket every time.

When I moved from LA to Tucson, first thing I did (besides recharge the R12) was to tint the windows. There are three types of tint. The cheapo and most prevalent is a dye-based tint. Basically, it provides the color and UV rejection, but little heat rejection. Then there's metalized tint (typically some type of titanium film). You get color, UV, and up to 60% heat rejection. Last, there's a hybrid. When I was in LA, I searched around and only found one shop that offered metalized tints. I even called the Lexus dealer and asked who they used, then that shop used a 3M dye tint. Anyways, I waited until I got to AZ and got metalized tints (performed by the Specialists). Vehicles were a '01 honda prelude (med factory tints) and mid 80s 4runner (dark factory tints on rear shell, light gray tints on front side windows). The difference was HUGE. I can leave the rig in the hot sun all day w/ windows rolled up w/ reflective silver (insulated) windshield thingie, and upon entering the vehicle, it feels no hotter inside than outside (we're talking 107F in the shade all day). It felt cooler inside the vehicle than when I was in So. CA (near the ocean) w/ no metallized tints. You can get the metallized tints w/ different transmission rates. I think the heat rejection property still holds (although probably not as much) for the light tints, too. It's more of a function of the metal coating than darkness of the tint. I have the windshield tinted down to the regulation line. You can find your state's tinting regualations on the web (% permitted for each window, how far down the windshield you can go).

The tint I am talking about is FormulaOne Ultimate 18, full metal, not shiny. Here are the ratings, http://www.formulaone.com/data.html. Thank you for the info. I believe it will make a huge difference. The Ultimate is full metal, no shiny. The Premier is the full metal, shiny. The comfort and classic are the dye based tints.

Ultimate is what I had done and it made a world of difference. I still leave a window or sunroof cracked though.

Don't know where you're located but I just had my Sequoia done last week here in the Phoenix area with top of the line metalized "non-shiny" tint for $130 for the whole truck. Two front doors were done 10% over legal and the rest of the truck... two rear doors quarter glass and tailgate glass all done in the darkest of dark limo type tint. Living in AZ most of my life I've come to find out that tint is pretty much a neccesity here. But venting the sunroof is easily as important for keeping the heat out.

In California, at least, tinting the front driver/passenger side windows and windshield is illegal. Some people use a light tint on the passenger windows, which is not so abvious.

In s. florida, if u don't have tint. You can expect your seats to be really hot once you get inside your vehicle (not the greatest feeling). I have tint all around and it makes a huge difference. I no longer have to turn my 80 on and wait outside for the AC to kick in. If that is the only and best deal you can get. Go for it. Well worth it.

Just passed a new law in Missouri - it's now legal. When I lived in CA had tinted windows but never got stopped for it. Always figured cops there had a lot more important things to tend to.

SO, anyway, anyone get there front windows tinted to match the others?

Depends upon which windows are tinted and to what level. California has always allowed tinting of windows other than the windshield. In some cases the front side windows, but within certain guidelines, as is most states. I may be wrong but I know of no states that allow other than factory tints on the windshield.

I just assumed it would be thought I was talking about the front driver and passenger window as opposed to the windshield being discussed. Didn't intend to make anyone have to break out the code from their local/state ordinance book. :

[glow=black,2,2] I think the basic premise of having bylaws relating to tinting is this : Fellow drivers need to be able to 'see' the faces of other drivers . At a controlled or uncontrolled intersection , it is deemed safer if we can see the next guy , and presumeably his intent . Hopefully we can telegraph his next move more accurately based on this data : Body language , eye contact ... how many fingers he is displaying

Starting out with your local PD is always a good beginning . Afterwards canvas the tinting shops in the area , and feel out they're perception/interpretation of this law , and ask them how far they are willing to take it . They will most likely take it as far as 'you' feel comfortable with , but will insist you take hold of the ball afterwards and absolve them of all responsibility .

Once this is done , just go for it ! Tint the front (driver/pass ) windows and hope for the best . Keep in mind though , that at nite , your visibility will be dramatically reduced , as will your confidence in backing up !
