WIll this custom paint kill resale value? (1 Viewer)

It appears a debate around something other than the OPs question about color has started.

Personally, as an Army Veteran—I think the Toyota “Army green” color is HIDEOUS. I’d never buy a green vehicle.

Perhaps that is because I looked at shades of flat green, flat tan, and various patterns of such for 20 yrs, lol.

My favorite car colors are silver, white, medium gray—which happen to be the colors of every vehicle in our family.

From a resale standpoint, apparently those colors do quite well if resale is a true concern.

Yeah I think I got my answer a while ago (basically it'll probably effect value, but not that much if done professionally) and then it kinda morphed into debating the current value. My buddy just bought a brand new Tacoma with the factory flat grey and blacked out TRD package, it looks badass, which got me thinkin about something like that. The current color of my TLC is silver, which I think looks really good with blacked out chrome and black TRD wheels, so I might just stick with that. But since I actually intend to take it offroad, I'd really like something to protect the fancy paint job from branches and crap (PNW here, lots of overgrown trails, branches, bushes, etc.) That flat grey vinyl could be cool too.

As long as I can be assured the vinyl is reversible without damaging the paint (maybe a ceramic coating would help), I'll probably end up going that route.

I'll throw some more fuel into the fire...

We paid mid-$60's for our nearly 10 year old LC and no new Tundra or Sequoia were even in consideration. As @ekolpack pointed out, different class entirely...

Yeah I was originally looking at 4Runners and Highlanders cause I couldn't afford a Land Cruiser. Then my current one popped up at a local Copart auction, which was likely to be in the range I could afford even after relatively minor cosmetic repairs. Getting inside that thing was like night and day vs a 4Runner, which is a pretty damn well built vehicle in it's own right.....but nothing like the LC 200. Compared to the LC, a 4Runner or Highlander or Sequoia feels like an economy car, almost like a toy. Every button, every surface, every handle and switch and compartment just seems like cheap, flimsy, plastic compared to the Cruiser, where everything is rock solid, substantial, tactile, overbuilt, and self-evidently highly engineered.

As someone who does audio engineering and electronics repair, I honestly feel better about replacing the HU with aftermarket than something like the seats or steering wheel or mechanical components. The fact is, even extremely well-built electronics wear out over time. Capacitors dry up, heat starts wearing down resistors and diodes and transistors, solder gets micro fractures, PCB's get stressed, LCD panels get worn out. Any piece of electronics that makes it 20 years is pretty impressive, and we're approaching that with early TLC 200's now. Getting up around 30 years, you almost certainly WILL start having problems, especially on anything with electrolytic caps.

Anyhow, yes, I agree, once you drive a TLC, you'll never look at a 4Runner or Tundra or other "high quality" trucks in the same way.

I went from a 4Runner to an LX570. 4Runners are great and solid, but yeah, a totally different experience.

The nice thing about 4Runners is they are (or at least were) cheap enough to wheel around and not worry about mucking up a $100k ride with very, very, very expensive parts. But new Runners are getting up there.....so yeah, a 200/LX570 is a great alternative. Still seems wrong taking one into serious off-road though....but that's why I got a little Hilux Crawler ;)

One nice thing about 4runners is that they have really good aftermarket support!

I have both the 4R and 200. Drove the 2012 Trail Edition runner for 240,000 miles with no issues. Loved it and still do, It's still going strong. Both great vehicles and totally different driving experience. 4R is more nimble through the woods, LC is a tank and unstoppable. LC components seem twice as beefy. Really enjoy driving both, but the LC better in all ways for longer trips and more planted if that makes sense.

I was strongly considering a 100 Series, and still think they're maybe a slightly better overall vehicle (debatable) than a 200.

I love my 100 but there is not a single thing it does better than my 200. Having wrenched quite a bit on both, every major component on the 200 is noticeably larger/stronger than the corresponding 100 part too.

Exactly. Even LC chief engineer confirms thIs. Why the love for 100 is strange! LC80 is more nimble with axle lockers. LC200 is one over-engineered tank with a very effective CRAWL control and amazing articulation.

What exactly does LC100 offer that is anything other than an average (well-engineered sure) SUV? It is neither here nor there. Average power yet thirsty. It has its fair share of expensive mechanical issues. Not exactly great off-road.

Damn, well that's interesting. I've never actually owned or even test driven an LC100 (checked em out, sat in em). When I was researching this stuff, everyone was raving about how good they were. My parents own an LS430 which is absolutely stellar....probably the best overall quality vehicle I've ever experienced, probably even better than my LC200 from a luxury standpoint (leather & interior trim is still gorgeous and looks brand new even after 20 years!). I guess I figured the LC100/LX470 was basically the flagship SUV version of that car, especially with all the rave reviews online.

But yeah, having been ALL OVER the TLC200 from inside to out due to all the work I've done on it, I can confirm it's a fuggin tank....built like a brick sh1t house. Every single thing attached to that vehicle is borderline overbuilt, right up the the edge of too much. Not gunna lie, the OEM head unit I took out weighs about thrice as much and feels 5x as solidly constructed as the Chinese HU replacement.....that said, a Nokia 3310 is probably 5x more solid than my new phone, doesn't mean I'll be rockin a 2001 brick any time soon :D

LS430 is LEGENDARY…i would argue that it may be even more legendary than LC200. Now that i have kids already, i would give my left nut for a well taken cared of LS430…around 2005-2006 years.
