I would say just paint it the color you want so you can enjoy it.

But if you're worried about resale and don't drive it as is, sell it now.

I don’t know…ever so often i check resale value (trade in) on KBB off my 2019 LC. Yeah the depreciation may be better than pre-pandemic, but still depreciating.

Personally i don’t look at eBay listing. Because if they are still on there then it is not selling. You can ask for any ridiculous price on eBay.

EDIT: just looked it up this morning...trade-in: $71,500. Private party: $73,500.

While this is good for me because I bought it for $77k in 2019 and I have about 49k miles...but given the MSRP, lack of supply, Toyota no longer making, and apparent today's overpriced market, the KBB value is kinda underwhelming.

Again, who in the F is selling the last V8 land cruiser?

Even I, who hates on my LX most of the time, will never sell it.

For some of us enthusiasts, we value LC differently than what average population and what dealers value.

Personally, IF i was shopping for 2019 LC, then i would NOT pay more than what KBB value my LC. Our LC is not Lexus LFA. :D

You would not, but others might. I personally never look at KBB values, I find them almost always inaccurate to real market rates for specialty vehicles. The KBB on one of my Supras hovered around the $40-45k mark for a long time, while real market value being $100k+.

Anyways, back on topic....

I think covid kinda killed edmunds/kbb valuations,

They will settle down though. Unless inflation cant be tamed 😉.

@ekolpack - Well, you'd have at least one buyer - me :)

In all seriousness, I've asked myself this exact question as to whether I'd paint my 2008 LX570 Army Green. At this point the amount is too much for me.

As my Grandpa used to say, “it’s worth only what someone is willing to pay for it.” Find one guy that’ll pay what you want, you’ve found the answer to be “no” to the question you asked. 20-30 years ago this conversation was similar for 911s. Where once people forward-dated cars, back-dated cars are commanding a premium; beyond the obvious non-factory changes, many are far from year-appropriate color or even factory colors. Some even have faux patina. While the purists cringe an audience has formed (many who can’t figure out why there are 3 pedals on the floor) that is willing to pay a premium for these cars. Time, the overall economy, auctions sites, social media influencers (God help us) and the like will all factor along with the individual vehicle itself. As others have said, build what you want and enjoy it, resale be damned.

You may not use KBB, but i bet that dealers and/or private party by average consumer do. Dealers rarely match KBB anyways! So, dealers likely will pay even less.

Most dealers don't use KBB. And IMO as Land Cruisers age and get more into "enthusiast" hands, less of them will use it also. This is fairly typical for specialty vehicles.

I think the 10k is on very low end of what repaint would cost. I shopped and eventually paid 7500 to repaint a 97 T100 in 2018 factory color with spray in black bed liner. It was doors off, glass and all trim removed quality job with warranty. If you repainting it in hopes of improving vehicle value that ship has probably sailed based on cost of paint job and cost estimates for LC. If you repainting it because you plan to keep it and just love that Green then it is do you have the money and will you part with it. I did not repaint my 97 T100 as cost equation. I did it cause I love that truck and I plan to keep it till I can't find parts to fix it. The old paint had seen better days from all 4x4ing in AZ and sitting out side in drive way for 21 years. Move to Texas with rain and humidity started rusting all the rock chips etc...

Yeah, i get what you’re saying…and i am all for skyrocketing value on my LC.

But Pontiac Aztec owners once said the very same thing you wrote….. :D

Unpopular opinion: Wraps are a waste of money.

They certaintly look cool and offer temporary color changes but unless one has money to blow, i think they are dumb.

Not looking for a debate: Wraps will trash your paint too.

Yeah, I've found KBB valuations on many enthusiast or "hot market" vehicles to be laughable. When I bought my '86 4x4 Hilux Truck last year, KBB put the value somewhere around $3000. Yeeeeeah......in most places, you'd be lucky to find one in decent shape for double that. Nicely restored ones are fetching insane prices.....parts alone are astronomical ($100 for a mud flap?!?!). Land Cruisers, Nissan GT-R's, Honda S2000's, etc. are no different. Check out what TLC's are ACTUALLY selling for, or at least the average prices they're offered at, and you'll get a much better idea of where the market actually is. As for the future, only time will tell, but I honestly think these will be highly sought after as the last "real" NA V8 Cruiser, like a 100 series but with timing chain instead of belt, and better technology, and the last Cruiser period offered in the US (at least as of now). What's not to love?!

Reeeeeally? I did not know this! I was under the impression that it would actually help protect the paint from damage, which is one reason it sounded appealing. I'll look into this!

Searching Google, I can't find any evidence to support this claim. Unless the wraps are installed improperly, or somebody knicks the paint while cutting the vinyl, everything I'm seeing supports the claim that vinyl wrap actually protects paint (I tried to ignore results from vinyl installers or sellers for obvious conflict of interest reasons). I did find one YouTube video where a guy with a Porsche showed that one certain brand (Avery Dennison) etched a pattern into the clearcoat, so I'd avoid this brand....or just be prepared to cut/polish the clearcoat upon removal. If you have any evidence/info to support this, I'm all ears....definitely don't want to risk damaging this paint after I put so much work into it.

So, if i sell my LC to a local car dealer, then you’re telling me that they will pay MORE than KBB/black book value?

Case in point.

2016 LC. 45,700 miles. TexasDirectAuto asking $67,589 (no haggling price).

KBB values that same car for: $63,900 - $68,507 as TRADE-IN value for EXCELLENT condition. VERY GOOD: $61k - 66,500. GOOD: $59k - $63k.

So, as you can see, KBB (at least in this example i found) is quite accurate. Actually, if you think about it, KBB is actually OVER-valuing the LC!! TexasDirectAuto is not making much profit over KBB value…according to TexasDirectAuto, that is a FAIR price.

This proves what I said earlier. Prices are coming down. Our LCs are nice…but not anything major special.
