Hey guy I have to toss out a line for some input on what to check next on my friends 1981 FJ40 2F Engine (all stock) that will not idle.
Here is what I was told happened:
Was driving a day ago for at least 20 min and all was fine, came to a stop sign and out of the blue the engine started to loose RPM and stated to run very rough, and then RPM dropped to were it would stall and had to restart and was hard to keep running. He was 5 min form home so it took a lot to keep it from shutting down on the way but made it by keeping the RPMs as high a possible and a little choke out.
It will most of the start in only with the choke full out and when it starts we can push the chock in and baby the throttle by way of the gas peddle by keeping it around 800-1,000 RPM.
It runs as if the timing was off but that was check as best as we could finding it was okay. Just will not hold an idle and sounds like crap.
We spent the whole day today looking for clues. Here are some of the things we checked so far:
Removed the air cleaner housing and air filter is due replacement.
Checked all hose for vacuum leaks
Checked all areas of engine for vacuum faults as best as possible due to engine not idling correct.
Checked carb idle solenoid and also did a by pass direct to battery -good
Checked all cylinders for compression - most all all are in the 120s
Checked all spark plugs all are fouled but not wet just crusty black
Checked for spark at plug wires all good
Checked rotor and cap all good also the air gap was good
Checked Battery for out put all good

I suspect the carb as it was rebuilt locally about 4-5 years ago.
One thing I wanted to mention was when we were doing the compression check, I had all the spark plugs removed and throttle wide open and coil wire removed. As we were tuning over the engine for test I could hear and see spark jumping from a plug wire to ground. The gray wires from the coil was still connected to the dizzy would this be the reason for power from the coil causing spark from the electronic ignition system?

Well thats all I can think of other than the spark plugs do need replacing and the air cleaner also. am hoping that the plugs when replaced tomorrow will shed some light.

Thanks folks

Where’s the fuel in the sight glass (is it aisin carb)?

Are you sure there’s plenty of fuel in the tank?

I have a bad idle too .. Check everything five times.. vacuum.. timing.. valves.. filter.. all possible leaks..
Finally (I hope) cleaned the carburetor again and replaced slow jets with a bigger size
so far, it's working fine..vacuum and RPM are very stable..

Carb sight gauge shows fuel in the center of the window (half way), and when running just a hair low. Fuel in tank also checked and fuel tank expansion valve for tank pressure venting and it is working. OAT has been around 100 degrees.
I may pull the jets tomorrow and remove the top half of the carb to check the insides for problems. The fuel filter will be next to replace as it looks dark brown. Unfortunately the owner had a date with the leaf spring shop he has been waiting for for several weeks to have his leaf springs reached back to normal as they have flattened over the years so most likely will have to trailer it to the shop for that so only have a half day tomorrow to look at things, work due on Wednesday.
Thanks guys we will move on what you have shared.
Cheers

Thanks, we did do that on the first item checks. We also did an over ride from the small computer emissions box that is located on the fire wall drivers side just to make sure the box is not faulty. Seems okay

Cheers

The idle circuit of the carb is plugged, small stainless steel wire works well or spring steel if you cant blow it out or spray it out with brake cleaner.

Update - seems as it has three areas to work on. The spark plugs were one of the main problems as when we look with a magnifier and flash light down in the inside of the plugs they were half way filled with carbon, supper fouling. Once replaced the engine runs and holds and idle but will not run smoothly so the carb is in need of some work maybe as suggested. The idle cutoff solenoid or the black box under the dash also maybe in qestion as the solenoid works intermittently like bad ground (its a two wire).
Looks as my friend will be looking into what has been mentioned. At least he got it to the shop for the springs.

Thanks
