Hi Mudders,

My 06/77 Fj40 battery cables are nasty and I've ordered new ones from Fourrunner. As I look around the engine bay I see this starter solenoid relay. I'm not finding it in the OEM schematics, so I assume it was a PO add. Isn't its function incorporated in the starter? Or is my starter some sort of Frankenstarter that requires it?

If the one on the starter is good, you shouldn't need that ford looking one. Try it without it and see.
Your starter looks like a 'high torque' type also.

Did the PO have some kind of kill switch wired through that relay? Looks like some serious overkill if so.

I'm fairly convinced, from looking at the other wiring, that most likely the Cruiser was located in the Soviet Union; alternatively, there was a deep seated fear of cosmic rays interfering with the electrics.
