v8 with about 285hp, 35inch tires and 4.11 gears. two trans shops have told me that it won't last, but i want the overdrive and lower first. i do plenty of highway driving. how many successful cases of this setup are there?

They hold up fine. You just need a different trans shop. Vettes make more power than that and use 700R4's with no problems...

Is the tranne pre-1986, or after. 87 & up 700r4 have been improved from the general. But then again, any GOOD tranny shop should be able to upgrade all older units to the stronger set up. Corvette servos, stronger bands, etc. If you keep your foot out of it ya oughta be cool.

do i need a lockup style or nonlockup? and what's the difference? i have an older model core-i think it's an 83model.

I thought they were all lockups, but I could be wrong on the early ones. 3 stepped splines on the input is lockup, only 2 would be nonlockup.
