I have the impression that it's been said here that a 16" wheel will fit a 2003+ but not sure and can't find a thread to that effect. Has anybody actually done that and knows for sure it works (i.e. fit calipers etc)?

I made a rough measurement several months ago after this same question was asked, And as far as I could tell it would JUST fit with the newer-style calipers...
But again.. it was just a ROUGH measurement.

If this question persists...I will bring a 16" to work with me, and I`ll try it on the next 03-up `cruiser that comes in the shop. :)

BTW... The clearance may be too close to allow proper cooling of the rotors however..hmmm...

do you know when they changed the calipers?
and yes, it would be great to find out for sure. I don't recall if this has been resolved yet or not.
IIRC the 03 came with 17" standard. But of course that increase from 16 could well have been just for the bling factor.
had another look. At first glance it looks like a 16" might fit but it'll be close indeed. And yes, the cooling is a very good point to consider...

The calipers were updated in 02/08 (03 model year) ...It looked like there would be less than 1/2" between the rim and the caliper...not good

In OZ tthe 2003 came out with 6GS x 16 steel on the standard model, 8JJ x 16 steel on the GXL and 8JJ x 17 alloy on the Sahara all with ventilated discs with 4 piston fixed callipers

I have some some 16" wheels mounted on my 04 LX470, so yes the clear. I have not measured the clearance, but its around 1/2" to 1" from the inner rim to the caliper.
BTW, I just made a 5K+ road trip with them and had no problems at all.

I love it when people have actually tried stuff and can comment! Now what about going the other way 06' wheels on a 99' is there any problem for example with the lugs?

same lug pattern for all years of US 100 series. Going bigger isn't an issue. (I guess going smaller isn't either per cTapia.)

well, one might assume that bigger gaps mean better cooling (although that is not obvious really). But then the question should also be: will that be a significant effect? And again, the answer is not obvious (well to me at least). I might have assumed that the bigger wheels are to clear bigger rotors and I do tend to trust Toy engineers, but then they may have been prey to the "bigger" is "blinger" line of marketing also, who knows...
All in all, I havent' given up yet on the notion of getting 16" for the 03...

I agree with your second line of thinking. I think they went to 18's because everybody else is going to larger wheels and they wanted to stay competitive. I would definitely want the 16's for off-road. But, IMO the 18's look better for driving around town.
