Will 5:29 gears fit LH78 axles?

I've got a set of 1990 LH78 axles with an electric locker in the rear.
The stock 4:88 gears don't cut it with the 35" tyres and the 3.1 Izuzu/Trooper engine/transmission/transfercase set up.

Can a 5:29 ring and pinion be bolted in without undue modifications?
Or is there some other reasonable option to achieve a better gear ratio?

Actually I think they do make the 5.xx gears for the front high pinion, I think they are the same gear set they use on the Taco or 4runner axles in later years. I would check into some toyota truck offerings and see if they are the same.

Cheers,

Michael

If the 529s are not available for the front high pinion, you might want to look into Marks T-case gears like a 108 to 1 high and 305 to 1 low . It may be an easier option.

I have the Marks gears I like them!

are the Marks gears any quieter yet? the last set i had the joy of experiencing howled at the moon...

I have a set from circa 2006 , they do whine a little bit, but not bad, I use Swepco 1/5 to Castrol gear oil. It is very livable. I hear the newer ones are much better noise wise. The lower range helps in the technical stuff but not quite low enough.

Translation...It's a Mutt :p

That's ok we will still talk to you :D

As for 7x series or any other non-us stuff all you guys need to do is call or email us. We are very familiar with almost all versions of LC's. As for the Light duty 70 series axles, you would have 8" diffs front and rear. Front is high pinion like 80 series front. Rear is std like mini truck. The only problem is that if your diffs are OEM factory 4.88 than the pinion has a different offset in the housing. This is also applicable to many US 4runners. If you do have OEM 4.88 you will also need to change the 3rd member housing along with the ring & pinion in order to go to 5.29. Another option would be to purchase complete assembled 3rd members with gears / locker of your choice. We offer all these options and have provided both ways for many of our international customers.

uuummm, if you go to a similar setup as the 80 series then you will have interference with the steering linkage on the 71/78 series...

Thanks for the info,
I've got stock 4.88s so getting assembled 3rd members will be the likely way I'll go.

Also right now I'm having problems getting the electric locker to work reliably. I suppose switching out the electric locker for an ARB will the best option.
The original purpose for this conversion was to get lockers. The available LJ78 axles seemed like a good way to go at the time.

arb conversion from elocker

If you have e-locker axle housings, they are notched from the factory for the e-locker diff actuator forks. If you went to Std housings with ARB or otherwise it would require wilding, grinding, tapping, etc to accomadate them

ummm, someone correct me if i am wrong but the CABLE locker housings where notched for the actuator but the elec housings are not...

at least that is what i came to beleive when i installed an elocker into a standard housing..
