So if it doesn't have the "open" wire which actually allows ambient air down the side, it will have another provision in the sensor body to ensure ambient air fills the inside of the probe tip?
Generic is fine, you just have to makre sure you wire it correctly. Some people cut off too much of the "open" wire to avoid using the iniversal connector or to address length issues. The signal is very weak (0.2 to 0.7 volts) and I also would think that trying to solder a connection could intere with the signal.
