Driver more important than truck!

Yes-the 100 series can go through the Rubicon! However, it is more a testament to the excellent skills/judgement of Amando the driver, then the prowess of the truck. On the Rubicon, the 100 had basically 3 handicaps to overcome. First, that truck is wide. The lines that would work for an 80 series do not work for a 100 series. Second, front suspension flex is lacking. It would routinely lift a wheel in the off camber stuff-so much so that we called it a tricycle. Off camber down hills looked particularly unstable. Third, the front steering/suspension is fragile. In a pinch situation, both front wheels would compress inward. While it didn't break, at one point on Walker Hill, it delayed progress for over an hour. A less skilled or more impatient driver would have broken his steering right there. I really have to hand it to Amando as he kept almost all of his sheet metal pretty and his mechanicals intact on one of the toughest trails in the Sierras.

On the upside, I will say that the cv joints on the 100 are pretty stout. Since a wheel was in the air so often, and the front axle was locked at the same time, those cv's withstood 100% of the torque delivered to the front axle.

It was extremely cool to see a 100 go through the Rubicon. Amando is the man for 1) bringing such a nice truck, and 2) driving it with such skill and finesse.

Disclaimer-I am in no way knocking 100 series trucks. I like them (and may buy one) and have new respect for their abilities. However, the average 100 series driver will not go through the Rubicon unscathed.

It's nice to see the 100 on the Rubicon. Good show and kudos to Armando and his friends who spotted him through there.

Schotts needs to "nut up" and take his through next year:D

I'm shooting for 2007 for mine;)

Nice work Armando.

I'm also looking forward to some more pics.

Thanks for the good info Drew.

Well said andy...my spidey senses tell me it may be a while before we see another 100 go through the con with so little damage. It was ALL driver for sure

We invited Shotts THIS year!

After watching Amando and spotting him on several obstacles, if you really want to do the Rubicon, I highly reccomend lockers front and rear, and not rely on the traction control.

I have several upgrades to do before I can attempt the Rubicon. Front and rear ARB's will go in next Spring. 4.88's and 35's in Spring of 2007. I wish I could just drop more cash right now but it doesn't always work that way:crybaby:

I also need more trail experience in this big ol' bitch. She's a ton bigger than my Taco;)

Congrats Amando, your 100 series rules. - by Alvarorb

The comments above were some of the people that helped me get through the Rubicon. All the spotting, patience and friendlyness made me calm and confident.

THANKS for everyone that was on this trip, it is something that I will remember always.

I cannot stress enough the importance of a confident spotter on this trail. :-)

Again thank you very much.

Yes, yes....really appreciated the invite. I'd a luvved to come along. I'd want to bring Becky though. Another year and the kids are out of high school. I'll be more mobile then. :)

And yes.....on these insane trails it comes down to the driver quite often. I'm remembering those Hells Gate shots of Amando. Perfect driving. :) :)

Amando did superbly, and never sweated the consequences. That truck is built, but the driver has lots of stick time and some super finesse skills. We also had some great spotters and rock stackers on this trip.

Hey dude, you missed some great carnitas from NorCal Doug Friday night, but no worries, we'll get you next time!

Amando -

This is probably a repeat question for you, buit did you custom build your rear bumper? That looks nice!

James,

It was built at Jay's (Snook) driveway, we just slapped some steel together (front & Rear) and did a lot of grinding :-)

Amando

You guys did a great job for slapping some steel together!

Well with Jay's background - Architect and Mechanical Engineer. I just happened to have the welder, plasma cutter and the truck :-) oh yeah lots of ear plugs (for the grinding - not from Jay talking) :-)

Amando
