I've searched and have yet to come up with facts that the early door will not fit later style cruisers. I have been told they will and won't fit. My searching on MUD says they will with slight modification of the latch. Talks with other club members say they won't fit because the door opening are different and there will be holes, gaps and an alignment issue with the winddhield on later style cruisers. What is correct? Who has done this and what problems are there with a hard top, windshield, and hinges?

And by early I mean the ones with the wind catcher pivot in the center. I think that was 67 -74?

i also would like to know this, except reverse, because i like how the later doors look better. a more modern look. i would then use my old doors to make half doors from...

Youre driving an fj 40 and you want modern?

There was a thread about running newer doors on an older tub, but I never figured out where to get the strikers, or what they should look like if I were to make some.. Anyone know?

thanks-
Dustin

Get the newer type of window channel from 1980 up. It fits all later type doors from '75. It doesn't have the chrome trim but it solves the window glass rattle.

I've seen a lot of loose channel pieces inside of doors that also rattle, Easy fix for nice tight doors.

I have 72 halfdoors on my 79 occasionally

Can you put newer doors on an older Cruiser? Such as 78 doors on a 71?

thanks-

And why is it that the driver's side door rattles the most when it is right next to your ear?

I added a 1/4 inch strip of cheesy stick-on weather strip on to the existing weather strip and this was a big improvement over slamming the door shut on a shop rag.

It cut down on leaks and drafts too.

It probably would be better to replace the hinge bushings, install new OEM seather strip and flip the latch loop over (on later doors) to tighten it up, but I don't have the inclination to fool with it.

I have a set of thick doors on an aqualu tub on my '75, looks like if I moved the strikers in they would fit properly but PO just added weatherstripping that was 3/4in thick, so first I'd have to remove that... maybe next year. meantime I am not too concerned about that "closed door" look. this could also be an aqualu issue. also the doors are about an inch short, but I am not sure if this might be a wrong year hardtop issue.
that probably doesn't help you out at all, but if trying them on or at least spending some quality time with a measuring tape is a possibility, you should be able to figure it out.

I've got new bushings, lock mechs and weather strip. It's got to be the window felt or something internal.

Radio sh@t the bed or I wouldn't even notice.

I have 76 doors on a 74. I think you should be able chagne them. I like the cleaner look of the newer dorrs, but I do miss the little vent windows. Good think it's almost time to take the top/doors off anyway.

hey TLCSKULLS- can you snap a pic of your door strikers on the tub youre running and any other 'interresting' things about the install?

thanks!

All you do is put the correct door striker on your door opening.

Then you can interchange the doors.

really? the strikers are alot different. The door jam has a little part that sticks out right there where the striker attaches. I could fab something up though.

Now I need to get some of those doors. I like the look of the old doors, but I think its time to move on. :D Anyone want to trade?

When I restored the doors on my '73, I had two problems: the rubber trim on the driver's side wing window and the window roll-up mechancism. Solved the former by importing the trim from Australia. Have never solved the latter and have gone through 2 mechanisms. They always seem to "sag" , leaving the window about 1" open.

So, if I had it to do over again, I'd have purchased and restored the new-style doors.

Dustin,

What style and year are the doors that you have???
I have the original doors off a 72, with the soft vinyl on the outside. Get back with me and we'll talk.
