Well, I don't think its a good thing, but, I opened the fill plug on the 3-speed transmission of my "new" 1966 FJ-40 and found what looked like to be lotion...

First off, what does that mean? I was not getting any whining or anything, I was just checking to see what the level was.

Part 2: This white oil was coming OUT of the fill plug... Which (what I have read) means that the seal between the x-fer case and transmission has gone bye-bye... correct?

I'll be draining and re-filling both x-fer case and transmission with GL-5 80w gear lube tomorrow... or should I buy 90w?

Thanks in advance for any help in what this could be....Also, any links or direction on changing this "seal".

My experience with the white oil instead of transparent gear oil is water contamination. Try replacing it and just watch it closely. You might have to change it out more than once to get rid of all the water.

Good luck.

Hmm... I can see that. I know white in the engine oil means water... so that makes sense.

Now, getting into the transmission is another story?! :D

Water in the tranny. You should check the transfercase as well

Might have been used as a swamp buggy.. Water probubly came in though the shifter. 3 speeds are tough , change oil couple of times and run it, same with TC same with the difs ...good luck

X2...............Water+Oil+Spinninggears = Drivetrain Mayonnaise, just drain and replace.

Well, that doesn't sound too bad. I'll go ahead and buy a few quarts of gear lube tomorrow. Thanks!

I really doubt this has any connection, but, I am getting a shudder in 1st gear ONLY. Reverse, 2nd and 3rd are smooth... But, 1st gear is shuddering no matter what I do.... Most likely a clutch issue, but, I cannot figure out why ONLY in first?!

More torque on the clutch when taking off in 1st, contaminated or worn clutch equals shudder in that situation...YMMV..

Cheers

So changing the clutch will help my situation?

I noticed a good amount of oil what looks to be seeping from either the rear main or oil pan gasket right at the connection of the tranny and engine. Could oil get in there?

I've never done a clutch job, maybe its time to learn :)

Yes, oil can get in there and foul your clutch disc, so you'd better be ready to fix those leaks or replacing your clutch may be a temporary and disappointing solution. A search will uncover plenty of information on how to do all of that.

Looks like dropping the pan and flywheel would be a good combination to battle some leaks....

Looking at it again, it looks like its coming from between the timing gear cover... Back to the searching.

I may try and spray some brake clean up in there to help for the time being. I'll have to wait a little while to tackle the job in full.

Thanks again.
