Got the cruiser back today from the local drivetrain specialist. Complete front diff overhaul. The bearings were beyond gone and there was some scoring and minor wear grooves in the ring. As you can see from the picture included this was the shape of the bearings. Major galling and scoring both on the rollers and the races, the worst of the bearings was the DS bearing (Same side as the diff locker)
Glad to have the truck back, it took three days to get it back. Also had the mechanic swap the birfs around, put new seals in and repack everything.

Three dollars short of $1K including parts and labor.

Here is the picture of the ring, it is hard to see, but there are hairline size wear marks almost in every grove, some minor cracks and uneven wear as well. I replaced the ring and pinion with a used set from a guy that had upgraded his gears to a higher ratio. Both were in perfect shape.

Antonio,

Seriously? This guy charged you under a grand for basically a complete front knuckle repack and seals, labor only on the ring/pinion, and swapping the birfs? Did you know the guy or was this just the every day deal?

Why did you choose to go with a use set of gears instead of a new set? I just installed a new set of upgraded 4.56s in my 94 for $500 each axle, pulled my 3rd members though.

This is the local drivetrain specialist that works mostly in race cars and 1/4 mile racers, he does mostly american stuff and minitrucks (differentials and drivelines), he had worked on cruisers, but never on 80 series.
I figured since he had to take the axles out to overhaul the differential why not swap the birfs and repack everything while there. I got the parts myself and he did the labor, I was lucky that I found a sweet deal on the used ring & pinnion set, he inspected them and found them to be in great shape, mine were in bad shape as you can see on the picture. I was going to take it to the dealer, but their rate was higher. He asked me to take the truck back on 5000 miles for a flush and refill of the diffrential he wants to make sure there is no metal on the oil.
