I am new to Diesels, and just bought an HJ47. Other than the fuel, is there any other fluids I need that are just for diesels or are they the same as Gassers?
I am going to change the oil, and want to be sure I put the right stuff in. I am assuming that the othe rfluids (PS, PB, etc) are the same.

Thanks

All the other fluids are the same.
Engine is 15w40

One of the most important things (if not thee most important) to maintaining engine life is regular oil changes.
Every 3000 miles or 5000 kms. Dino or synthetic does not matter as much as regular changes.
I like synthetic, but no one will fault your for using Dino, and regualar swaps.
You can get a longer drain interval with Synthetic, but a very good oil filter is important.

In any event, dont use a cheap/bad filter.
Here is a study on your typical Fram/Quaker/Penzoil...
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

Go for a Toyota, NAPA, Donaldson etc....
Donaldson is a great filter and probably the cheapest.
Any Finning/CAT dealer will have them.
You can goto the donaldson site to find a dealer.
www.donaldson.com

I don't have the part number handy, but they can cross reference it for you.
Its a PH8A.

I think I will do a new topic later with filter numbers.

Cheers,
Nick

Lots of filter information already here Nick: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=42417

GregFrench: Read this for some great information on oils: http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

Also http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/ubbthreads.php for a good discussion site on oils.

Where you are will dictate somewhat which oil to use. I like Chevron Delo 400, 15/40 for the older IDI Toy motors.

I was going to do a discussion on the quality of filter vrs price.
And which is the best bet for our Yota's.

As Greg said, the Cheveron Delo is a great oil.
The other popular one is Shell Rotella.
I would use these two as my preference every time.

We have no bulk Chevron dealer where I live, so I use Shell.
But my preference would be for Chevron.

I normally use Mobil 1 synthetic. Will that work in my diesel? (DNRTA)

Just make sure its the right weight.
You want a diesel oil.
0w40
5w40
15x40
etc...

Usually if its for a diesel the packaging will say somewhere.
I just did a search. The mobil 1 synth diesel is a 5w-40

Cheers,
Nick

I think you guys put too much thought into oil. IMOP anyhow. This is a diesel truck engine(not a super tight clearance 9000rpm race engine). Keeping the oil level full and not letting get too low is the key to long engine life.

What filter, oil brand etc is just getting carried away. Change it often and use the correct grade for your temperature. Too me thats all that matters.

Oil studies are good to know, cause if the no name brand is the same filter quality ,why pay for name brand.

Also A thing to ponder is, what was your PO like on preventative maintenance? These vehicles are between 15-20 yrs old. So how is buying the best oil, filters going to extend the life of these engines?

You make some very good points BB.
Especially about PO maintaince.
The best fluids in the world will not save an engine that is half beat.

I do like the idea of synthetic's, espcially for burn off temps. But they do cost alot more. But I am pretty anal with cool down times.
I am starting to wonder if running snythetics are worth the extra costs?
I never did run them to 10,000KM which would offset the cost over running to 5000KM's. Also if you run extended intervals, you only use one filter, not two. But then you are going to want a better (read: more expensive) filter.

I usually change my oil well before that (5K for sure on Dino).
A donaldson filter is cheap ($6) and high quality.
I think I will run it on dino rotella from now on.

With my 1HD-T I was more anal.
Rebuild cost are alot more that a 13BT, and the oil filter was side mounted so it drained back. My 13T does not.

Anyways, your right.
Sorry for rambling on.
The biggest difference (80-90%) is ust regualar changes.
I am a very firm beliver in that.

Nick

The engine oil for diesels MUST be "C" rated for compression ignition. ie: "CD", "CE" etc. This ensures the oil is capable of dealing with the soot buildup in diesels.
It will show on the oil. Gas engine oils are rated "S" for spark ignition.
Some oils are rated for both.

I also must add I like diesels cause I am cheap at heart. SO I see no need in the latest greatest oils. Plus I do not know how the PO treated my engine for the first 240k kms.

Diesels are poplular in 3rd world applications cause they are robust and take a beating. And poor maintenance and keep on running.

Yah I put no name Canadian Tire 15w40 diesel oil in my engine. Who knows it could be Rotella.........

I saw a strory about an old Gardiner diesel supplied as an aid package to an African village decades ago.
It had the exhaust coming straight out of the head as the manifold had long since been discarded,no air filter and had never had any maintenance on the pump or injectors in 20 years except for an occasional oil change.

It was still banging away every day pumping water like it was part of the scenery:D

The old Gardiners were like the Roll Royce of diesels because one man would build them from start to finish and place his ID on the block;)

Almost all synthetic oil is rate for "S" and "C" ... maybe all.
