I went to Autozone and they have 3 different bug-guards for the LC -- I tried one of them, and the hood wouldn't close and the lip was like at a 90 degree angle -- it looked sooo wrong, and I couldn't close the hood --

-- anyone have any brand they've used with luck on the 80? Would you advise one in the first place?

Toyota offers an OEM hood protector.

00500-60951, list $89.68
It fits quite nicely and you do not need to poke extra holes in your hood. I do not care for the looks of hood protectors in general. I think the 80 looks better without one. It's, of course, personal taste.

ooohhhh --- thanks, C-Dan -- I'll order it and see if I like it -- if not, I'll return it to my friendly parts dept... :)

I use a Weathertech..same as the windowshades. Lower profile than Bugflector, and no extra holes to drill. Hood closes normally. No respectable mall cruiser and part time swamper is complete without one.

I have to agree with Dan, I don't like them either.

FWIW--When I was looking around for an 80 before I bought my 97 I looked at a 91. It had a bug guard on it, not sure if it was OEM or aftermarket. It rattled and vibrated alot. Apparantly it had been vibrating for some time because the paint had rubbed off on each corner of the hood where it was making contact. That thing caused more damage then it prevented. This alone is reason enough for me to NEVER install one.

Mine had one when I bought it, it appears to be OEM, fits well, with no extra holes to mount it, and has not damaged any paint (it doesn't touch the paint at all). I haven't taken it off except to clean it once, so don't know if it makes a difference with bugs or rock chips on the windshield.

I also have the Toyota guard. I do a lot of highway driving and it does protect the hood from chips. It is a rather low profile guard so it doesn't stick out like a sour thumb. I hardly notice it against the black paint of mt truck. Bob

I was getting highway hood chips prior to installing it, now I do not have to worry about that, it is really good for those who live in the snow belt like me, all the rock salt will find your front bumper as well as your hood on the highway, so with the hood guard on I am fine.

Thanks

Well, I installed my guard tonight -- all I can say is that I LOVE OEM stuff -- Toyota really did a top-notch job with the guard, as compared to the cheap american crap that some conglomerate tried to sell me from autozone --

-- I can't say enough about the quality of the Toyota stuff -- if they make brushguards this good, now I see why their engines, trans, and LCs in general just plain dominate --

Better yet, can you get these sampleaccessories from Toyota AU and sell 'em here in USA?

Al -- I even took my girlfriend outside to see it last night -- in the dark -- had to get the flashlight out -- she just laughed at me!

Eric,

Now go ahead and get the window treatment as well, I have them on the rig and they are great in the rain / snow, again stick to OME.
