I know what engine it used to have but I can't find out which engine it has now. How do I check so I can get the right filter?

WHERE DO I FIND THE ENGINE DESIGNATION?

In my prelude, 626, Miata, and every other car I've ever worked on has an engine designation stamped to the block.

Once i find it i can figure out where the engine came from and which oil filter I can get...

Welcoeme aboard :flipoff2:

Noob...

your post cryptic.
need more background info.

Some had a sticker affixed to the block.
Mine didn't.

The only number I've ever seen is the VIN, which is riveted onto the passenger front of the head just above the thermostat housing.

OK, if you want me to be technical here goes:

It's a 1995 FJ80 that had the 3FE, but the last cam gave completely out and screwed up everything. My mother replaced the engine thru a company in Littleton, CO and were expecting it to be the same engine that was stock. I went to replace the oil filter for her, but it turns out that it's not the right filter.

So EVERYTHING about what is stock or what happened IS IRRELAVANT because the engine could have even come from a Supra. I am a newb when it comes to landcruisers and wheeling but please don't think I'm stupid.

FEHW, that was a lung full... Sorry, I felt like I needed to rant...

In any case, if it doesn't have the designation on the engine then how do I find out what engine it is? All I can tell is that it is DOHC, 24 valve, and I6; which sounds like it could either be a Supra, Altezza, IS300, SC350, CelicaSupra, Land Cruiser, or 4Runner engine. If you need me to check something then let me know insead of :flipoff2:ing. OK?

Seriously though, thanks.

If it’s a I6 it is probably a 1FZ but that would be stock for that year.
Does it happen to have a remote oil filter?
Take a pic of it an post it.

The filter is integrated into the engine. I'll get a pic as soon as I can, but right now I can only describe it... sry...

Reason for edit: It's late for me, sorry, bad word replaced...

well to narrow it down a little it can't be a 4runner engine. They never came with an I6 only I4, V6 or V8 now. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the 3FE never came in a 95LC that was a 91-92 engine right for the 80 series? So that means the engine it had before wasn't stock and you may now have a stock engine.

yeah it HAD 100% a 1FZE. also there is NO way another toyota I6 is in your mama's ride. If they did that there would be new wire harness, ecu, etc etc = major pain the azz and mucho mucho $$$.

bottom line you got the wrong filter. define how you know it's the wrong filter. most toyota engines use the same filter, supra, land cruiser etc. so even if you had say a supra engine in there the filter will screw on.

I'm pretty sure that was the code, but it's been a while since I looked thru the manual, but it has always been the stock engine for that year, until the swap of course. My mom and now ex-husband purchased it brand new.

I was about to remove the filter and noticed that the current filter is much smaller, in both directions, than the new one. Could the parts store have messed up the part? If they didn't, does this engine care if the filter is higher volume than the old one (I know my Prelude's does)?

Squalus,

Your mom's truck came with the 1FZ-FE I6 fuel injected 24v engine if it was purchased new here in the US. The engine swap may have come from another year (93-97 had the same engine) but it is highly unlikely that it would have a different engine. Possible, but very unlikely since, as others mentioned, an engine swap for a different engine is a very big job and big $$$.

Assuming she still has the 1FZ-FE, there are several Toyota filters for this engine. They come in basically two sizes (OEM filters.) Both sizes will fit and both sizes work OK. The smaller filters came along in the later years; ostensibly to reduce the start-up rattle that some have experienced.

If you have a Toytota filter then give us the part number and we can tell you for certain whether you have a filter that will fit.

There is also an engine identifier stamped in the block. I'll try to round up a picture.

Here ya go...

call the parts store and ask them to cross reference the number off
the filter that is currently on the LC, see what they come up with.

could be the old filter Is wrong, the new is wrong or just different
brands different sizes.

Pictas!! Thank you.

I didn't realize that swaping engines in LCs where that much of a pain. Of course, I'm used to my Honda.... :ban:

If it says 24 valve on the valve cover and its an inline 6, then its a 1FZ. Drive into a dealership sevice department and have someone look...they'll tell you what you need if you are still in doubt.

If the distributor is on the driver side of the engine as well as the oil filter (it bing just under and a little back of the distributor) then it is a 1FZ. If the distributor is on the passenger side as well as the oil filter then It is a 3FE. The oil filter for the 3fe will fit on a 1FZ and vice versa. If the filter does not fit, then the parts guy gave you the wrong filter, not the first time or last time a parts pusher has messed up (except for CDan). later robbie
