    WTF?

So I cruise into this nice bakery to get my wife a birthday cake. She likes German Chocolate cake, so Germ Choc it is...

I go to this nice, local bakery and walk in and ask the cake bitch if they have German Chocolate. She looks at me like my crank is hanging out and says, "Um, not usually..."

    Me: "Why not?"

Her: "Um, this is a French bakery..."

Me: "WTF? So you don't do German Chocolate at all? I can't order one?"

    Her: "No..."

    Me:

The name of the place is Olive St Bakery. How the hell are you supposed to know it is French?

So I ask her wher I can get one and she wants to send me to the next town, 20 miles south. I'm like "No, how about here in this town?"

Finally they recomend Whole Foods here. Fine. Whatever.

It just seems funny. All these local businesses complain about chain stores coming into town. Then you go to buy s*** from them and they turn you down. I mean, c'mon! French people never make German Chocolate cake??? She didn't even sound French! They already have the cake s*** in the kitchen...

I could be missing some subtle point here. Obviously I don't bake s***. If I did, this would be a moot point.

I mean if I were a Peugot mechanic and some guy wanted the oil changed in his BMW, I think I could rally...

That does seem pretty stupid, especially for a local bakery shop that honestly can not be THAT busy, so the extra money would be good for them...

I guess if they only make French desserts/pastries (and were extremely pissy) then it might make sense they wouldn't make an American creation (German Chocolate cake has NOTHING to do with Germans or Germany, the baker who came up with it had a last name of "German", that's where the name came from).

    Mmmm....cake... :D

make one for your wife, she'll probably get a bigger kick out of that.

go to the grocery store, they sell them in the box and the icing in a can. just add stuff stir and cook. you can do it.

Maybe she did you a favor by not baking something they are not good at?

Other than that, I can totally relate.

    yeah...

it's like when I went to a local italian restaurant and ordered chow mein...

I got the same freakin' attitude!

    :D

while I agree with you that on some level, a cake, is a cake, is a cake...and they should've been more flexible...it's really a business's right to sell what they want to sell.

that said, in this case, I'd probably be annoyed too. more because I'd have to drive around town looking for a place to bake a simple cake, than because some baker's attitude.

Reminds me of the time I stormed into the local bagel shop and ranted about the big red hebrew pube I pulled out of my breakfast. Turns out they roll their bagel dough on burlap. D'Oh!

ding ding ding, we have a winner.:D

Sorry, but I'm with the bakery here. Can't get mad at them for not letting you order off the menu. They probably have the capability of making you a grilled cheese sandwich too, but that's not what they do. You stumbled into the wrong place. Deal.

You should have told her the French bakeries in Paris made lots of German Chocolate Cake....so the Nazis would have something to snack on while they marched through town.

Why the hell would some one do that? Burlap smells funky and I doubt it would taste much better. Not to mention the percieved hair problem.

Her birthday was the 20th - I always plan in advance! :D

    Thanks for the tips though.

Next year I'll try making one. I'm sure if I can pull off the PS conversion I can make a cake w/o the help of the French!

I thought I heard them saying "Now go away or I will taunt you a second time!" as I was leaving...
