Does the owner need a hand or has he got the recovery taken care of? It might be a good opportunity for or SAR...

I am expecting a call from him. Googled him and found out he is the owner of a bulb nursery in Smith River and his son runs part of the business. So I assume he is an older guy and it is looking like foul play is less likely. I will see if he needs assistance in the recovery but I think he probably already has got it our there.

And here is the story:

A guy named Marshall hooked up with a lady at the casino on Friday night and stole her cell phone and prescription meds. Saturday morning at 9:30 AM the owner of the truck had it parked at his office 8 feet from the office door with the keys in the rig just like he has for the last 40 years. Marshall steals the truck while supposed high on pills and leaves a trail by smashing into the bank and ditch many times on his way up where the truck ended up. There were fallen trees partially blocking the road coming up that side and that is why the windshield is broken. He somehow lost the driver front tire and proceeded another 50 yards or so before getting it stuck sideways in the road where we found it. CHP guessed it was abandoned there around 1 PM. We were there at noon according to my camera picture dating. We JUST missed the guy if he wasn't hiding from us. I called CHP around 2 PM and reported it. The CHP went up and found the rig that afternoon and came back down into Smith River city and reported it to the owner at 5:30 PM. The owner and his son went to recover the vehicle early Sunday morning and came upon Marshall asleep in the road somewhere up there. Upon driving up to within 30 yards a very cold looking Marshall woke up and got up in the road and looked very happy to see the owner and his son who Marshall had never seen before. The owner notices Marshall in the same clothing he had on when he stole his truck and drives right by him. Owner gets to truck and finds tie rod broken and drives back down to town not seeing Marshall this time. On the way down the cell phone rings that they found in the truck and it is the female owner of the cell who tells her story of Marshall stealing from her. The CHP heads back up that evening hoping their headlights while get Marshall to flag them down not knowing there are CHP. They make their way up pretty far in the snow and turn around without finding him. Monday the owners go up and weld up the tie rod and put on a new tire and drive down to the body shop. No word or sight of Marshall who probably hiked or got a ride out or became a perp popsicle in the woods. End of story.

Wow, thats some story. Crazzzy! Thanks G.

its kind of weird that the story line put you there so close to the other guy.
was the engine warm when you guys rolled up or what?

Ya seriously. I understood the precaution over the CB of "this doesn't look good" and "lock and load", but when it turns out to be THAT close in timing.... little eerie.

I didn't notice the engine being warm although we set the items we took on the hood and took pictures. I would say realistically that we were within an hour and half of him at the most. If it was real close then he saw us coming down the switchbacks on the other side of the ridge and probably hid. My guess is that he was already hoofing in back the way he came. But if he was way out of it who knows what he decided to do. He had time to tear through the rig and scatter stuff around so he couldn't have been too far away from us. If we were right there within minutes of him we would have heard the rig making cooling metal noises I'm sure since it was cold out and the heat of the engine the way he was supposedly driving would have been noticeable.

When we first walked up I put my wrist on the hood and driver fender, neither were noticably hot. I just assumed the warmth was from the sun...

Hind sight I should have used my bino's and glassed the area from across the draw. I don't think any of us thought that it had been dumped so recently.

it is stories like this that have helped me make the decision to carry a 38 special when I go off-roading..... You just never know what you are going to come across. However, most of the time my little 38 will be outgunned by some of the heavy stuff some guys carry!!!!

Sounds like a good time was had by all. I hope to join the club and your guys on a trip one day.......

Update: CHP pulled over a stolen vehicle today and got the perp. Hopefully 2 stolen vehicles within a week will get him some time.

Travis- Owner is cool if we head to coast anytime soon to bring stuff over OR he has a truck coming through town on Monday that might be able to pick it up if it's a reasonable hour. Let me know if you want to leave it here in case the truck does come through on Monday.

BUSTED! sweet.

Some one is a bit bitter...no?
