Heya all,

Im a proud owner of an FZJ80, 1FZ-fe, and have owned it for about 7 years now. But i have an ongoing issue that I just can't fix and no one is able to give me an answer to thats driving me nuts. I have an issue with both my front wheels, I just can't keep them tight enough. They shake / wobble so much that i go through a set of tyres every 12 months. Ive change out the bearings every 12 months and have replaced the spindle nuts 3 times. And i've even put new spindles on it. Every time i go to tighten up the wheels i get 3/4 to 1 full turn on the spindle nuts. Incase you need to know the rims are a 16" Ali 'Allied Wasp II' of which have been on the car since ive owned it and I run Micky T Claws, MTZ & ATZ 33" rubber all of which has had the same issue.

Scratching my head, any ideas...

I have a similar wobble, my regular mechanic couldn't figure it out so I went to the next level. I went to see @landtank and he figured out it was the front bearings, we're going to replace them on the 27th, I'll let you know if I learn anything during that.

If your following the FSM to tighten your wheel bearings, that may be your problem, some members say the factory torque spec's are to light. Contact Mud member Tools R Us, he can tell you how he tightens his customers wheel bearing. He doesn't use that fish scale that the manual tells you to use. If i remember right he uses 35 foot pounds of torque to tighten the inner wheel bearing nut, and 47 foot pounds of torque to lock the outer wheel bearing nut. But Pm him to make sure I'm telling you the correct torque numbers.

I fully subscribe to the theory that the FSM wheel bearing preload is spec'd for running a stock wheel/tire. When we bolt up larger, heavier wheels, we need to increasing the preload accordingly. I run 35's on a 17" beadlock and noticed some odd chop on a brand new set of Falken M/Ts after an axle overhaul. When I rotated the tires and upped the bearing preload per @Tools R Us guideline, it solved the problem. Been several thousand miles now and the wear is very even.

Do those have a different offset than the stock wheels?

Are you replacing the races when you replace the bearings?

Are you replacing the thrust washer?
