I want to order some 33" BFG Mud Krawlers (im simplifying the name) and the $50 steelies in a 15 or 16". I noticed they only come in 10.5" width. Is this a useful width to have on my all purpose rig, or do I want to go narrower on the wheel and tire?

Thanks!

33x9.5 on stock rims thats my pick

My 33x12.50x15 mounted on 10" wide wheels look to stretched out, made them a bit shorter, I don't care for it.

tires

I am running stock rims with BFG 33 x 10.5 --pretty classic look but not to skinny, not so wide they throw mud down the side of the vehicle

I'm running BFG MTRs 33x12.50x15 on 8" wheels for the last25 years, they look fine, not too wide, not too narrow. I never heard of the 2/3 rule before but I think it is something to remember.

X2... what was that again? I already forgot, have to go back and reread; Hell, I'll just bookmark it :hmm:

For wheels, I follow the 2/3's rule for anything but super wide tires. You take the desired tire width, multiply by two and then divide by three.

As an example, my 35x12.5s... 12.5x2 = 25... 25/3 = ~8". So I run 8" rims and never had an issue.

Sounds great. For reference do you know where the rule comes from? Thanks.

Guess I have to agree with the 3/2 rule too. Mine are 32x10.50s on 7s. OK check my math, 10.5 times 2 equals 21 divided by 3 equals 7. I will say I wish mine were wider but I also wish they were taller so...go figure.

I have always liked 33x12.50-15's on 15x8 rims,thats what I have.I don't really care for the 15x10 rims that much.I would also run 35's on a 15x8,as I liked the 35"(315's)on the 16x8 stock 80 wheels on my old FZJ80.

My 2 cents

Over the past 10 years I have run 33x10.5 BFG All-terrain, 33x9.5 BFG All-terrain, & dunlop 33x12.5s. For an all purpose rig I prefer the 9.5s or 10.5s because they wander much less on pavement & there is much less "wheel whine". I think I'll stick w/ 10.5s for on road use just because I like the look better than the 9.5s & I didn't find much difference in performance. I use 2 different sets of wheels, but I couldn't speak to any real difference in ride - go with the sage advice above for sizing & find a wheel you like.

Probably closer to Phi

.618, the golden ratio
or take your wheel width and multiply it by 1.618
