Hello,
new guy here and had a landcruiser for a few years now, but haven't really touched it. I have got a '93 HZJ70 and have been thinking about putting the wheels out slightly, just to balance out, as sometimes it sways! Just put on new p265/75r15 tyres on the standard rims. Does anyone have any recommendations on how far (if at all) I should put out the wheels and what spacers do you recommend?
Any help greatly appreciated!

Ps- there is a picture of my Landcruiser in the 70 series listing.

You really need wheel spacers .? I been runnign 2" wheel spacers from marlin about 3 years without problems .. but it was my choice ..

Other option it's run a new wheels with apropiate backspacing ..

I have 1.5" wheel spacers and can feel it being more stable (drove a friends 74 withou spacers).

With my summer rims its out another 1.5 on each side (for a total of 3" per side).
Night and day difference. Go for it.

Cheers,
Nick

I have 1.5" spacers. I like them. However, before using spacers to solve a swaying problem, you might check a few things: worn shocks, bushings and springs can allow excessive sway. So can low tire pressure. If these are all good, then maybe spacers will help.

hey,
The shock covers are in a poor shape but the actual shock seems in good shape. Will replace shocks for next M.O.T test. Perhaps will wait until then!
Thanks for the help here.

on 16" or 15" wheels?
got some pics?

They are with a 16" wheel (255/85/16)
Not 100% sure what the BS is on the rim. I have never measured.
On an 80 it would sit pretty flush. So 3.5 - 3.75 perhaps?
What is stock BS on 70 series steel rim?
That would tell me what mine is.

Cheers,
N.

Anyways, here is the pic with summer tires and wheel spacers.

Is it possible that spacers add pressure on the hubs/wheel bearings leading to wearing? thanks for the help, proper novice here!

Generally speaking: Yes.
Because the centre of the rim moves outward, the forces working on the bearings are as well.
In extreme cases the bearings are loaded that different compared to the 'normal' conditions that it can get dangerous. i.e when spacers are added and rims are mounted inside out. In this case are bearing could fail immedately because of extreme loads. I've even seen axles bending.
When using spacers of 15 - 25 mm (1/2 - 1 inch) one can expect a shorter lifetime, but if you take really care of your bearings then you will hardly notice it.
It mainly depends on what kind of construction your rig has. SF in this case have an advantage because of the way the bearings are loaded.

that sounds a bit worrying! I would only be putting the wheels out by 1 1/2' each side (30mm). Hope this won't put too much strain on!

I don't regard this to be extreme. I think it's touching limits if you look at wear and tear, but not dangerous if well maintained.

What you will encounter is much more knocking in the steeringwheel.
Because the forces, working on the rims (wheels) move away from the swivelpoint (kingpin) due to the longer arm (=distance rim centreline vs kingpin-centre) you will feel stones and things like that hitting the wheel far more pronounced in the steeringwheel.

This also means that the forces working on the tie-rods - steeringarms and steeringhouse are heavier than standard. Therefore regular inspection (more often than normal) is necessary.

Ditto ..

IMOP and in my case have close to 3 years with 2" wheel spacers witn only one wheel bearing issue ( I thought it's anycase close to die ).

IMOP it gonna represent double of wear in your wheel bearing than normal.

I run 1.5 inch snake racing spacers on my 73 series and it made a massive improvement on handling and stability.

hmmm i rekon my 3" spacers are gonna be fun then...

and my 5 1/2" backspaced rims... haha

i have Hysteer arms and kingpins, upgraded studs and all that...

Time will tell i suppose

after drivig a cruiser for a quarter of a century i am curious as to what kind of driving you boys are doing where you NEED spacers for stability??

yes, spacers will increase bearing wear but not signifcantly.

i would suggest a wider tire rather than the skinny tire and spacer...that being said i am considering a customer set of spacers for the "dually" rear i am thinking of for the FJ75...

its more of a precaution for me crushers...

After all this work, i want to make it stay upright for as long as possible

38.5x14.5x15 tires on 10" rims with 5 1/2" backspace, 3" wheel spacers...

remember im doing a SOA also..

and a SR

and lifted parabolics....

So its tall

and wide!
