Got a bit sick of seeing this thing and wondering what its purpose is so here it is. I was thinking maybe armour plating or a mud collector to help the chassis in its rusting process :D
Front is to the right of pic.
It would sort of make sense to me if it was facing backward to stop mud getting into the crossmember tube, but the way it is I have no clue.

exhaust heat shield for this gas tank i think?

Odd I don't have that on any of my BJs would not be heat shield for gas tank it looks to close to the frame for heat deflection,I have the holes in the frame there but no lines run on that side of the frame.
I would think if it was a heat shield it would 45 to run horizontal with the floor pan.

i have that plate, but it should be bolted on top of the frame horizontaly, extending on the outside of the frame. I think it is a heat shield for the tank. It shouldn't go there at all. And usually flat, not bended like that

Well this "splash plate" on my LH chassis rail is similar.

Perhaps your PO didn't know where it was supposed to go. So she fitted it there and had to "mould it a bit" to make it look right. He he he.

Having looked at the other PO repairs and mods nothing would surprise me, but it seems as though the mystery continues...

I'd guess it's there to keep the gas flowing out of the gaping hole in your tank from hitting the hot muffler

It would miss the plate, have a look at the pic at the top of the page.

Well Tom, looks like I might have something that you don't have... and don't bother making me any offers as its not for sale LOL :smokin:

me too

You are not alone, mine even has the custom open hole, must of been a weight saving idea.

Thanks for that pilotmike. The reason mine is bent now that I look at all this is the crappy repair job on the exhaust pipe section that's been welded in, sticks out too far so they've had to bend it the buggers.
Looks like we've got some pretty original cruisers you and I :D

Goddamnit!!!!!!!

The EPC says my 1979 was supposed to have been fitted with one. But I'm pretty sure it never was.

And that's obviously NOT Pilotmike's kiwi BJ42 he's pictured there. Not clean enough by ANY means. So it must be from his 1977! (Going from his signature line.)

So THERE! I'm really NOT jealous....................... Honest :D

PS. After all, my exhaust had the heat-shield (when I bought the vehicle back in 1981) that bolts to a bend as it passes near the fuel tank. - Incidentally I still have that shield but it no longer fits properly because I went for a slightly larger-OD exhaust some years back. (So it's no longer fitted.)
