need to replace the head gasket and exhaust gasket anyone know where and what the best availabe for a good old 86 2F:cheers::wrench:

OEM toyota for both....Call Dan at American Toyota in New Mexico. Tell him you're a MUD member.

He's the best...won't :steer: you wrong.

Head gasket thought

Also, make sure to ask Dan if there is a top/bottom side specific orientation. I know on Ford 460's, there is a right orientation for the gaskets, and if done wrong causes some nasty overheating issues.

Not sure if a 2F has similar issues, but won't hurt to ask, and CD will be able to answer that for 100% certain. Might want to see about the EGR while you have that torn apart also - there are some aftermarket replacements (Remflex?) that are touted to be better than OEM stock.

Toyota head gasket is about 128 bucks from Beno. Felpro is 40 bucks at the corner store.
(I'm changing mine right now)
Your choice. They really only go on one way, that tab goes towards the rear (#6).
I'm trying a Remflex manifold gasket for the first time, like it so far but haven't started it up yet.

Many threads on here with folks going the cheap route and then replacing with oem gasket. There is a difference and the majority of stories will be about folks going with the toyota gasket in the end. Do a search on it for more info.

Sure. And if money AND time were no consideration, I'd have waited for the package from NM. But, my local store had it in stock and I can change out that gasket in an afternoon. It's a lot easier on a pre-smog 2F...
Plus, that last Fel-pro gasket lasted 7 years and I know why it blew. I'll bet you 128 bucks that my new Fel-pro will last until my next engine rebuild. and I'm running a higher compression than a stock 2f, due to my late F head.
If I had plenty of time, I'd prefer the OEM with the improved firerings.

Is that the new, improved, OEM head gasket with the new, improved fire rings?

Dunno. Haven't seen the "New-Improved" or, at least, haven't recognized whether I had a N-I or not. All I know is the parts guy at an import parts house I go to that's been in business for 40+ years, insisted he could get OEM LC 2F head gaskets. I ordered one, and compared it to an OE Toyota dealer-bought HG (about a year ago) and they were identical. I'll post a pic when I get home and you can tell me...

This gasket was purchased by another MUD member just a couple of weeks ago. It's not a Stone gasket, but it comes wrapped this way.

Seems to me that several cheap gaskets and the time it takes to do multiple change outs, ends up being more than doing it with the correct parts. So if time and money are no consideration, go ahead and roll the dice. Like I said, do a search and you"ll see that a large number of members have had real issues with non oem head gaskets. I know of know one thats posted up problems with the OEM ones. It your dime, spend it the way you want. I am just answering the question asked.

head fix

while you have your head off, may I sugest you do the
oil galley plug(fix).
with the head off it will be much easier.

I would also have the tap the head for a mechanical temp gauge..when I do the head on mine I'm making sure they do this for me

OEM all the way. Unless you want to take it apart again soon.....

oem from Cruiserparts.net.... got the head up kit for a total of 164$ with shipping, thanks for all the help guys
