according to prado t a running unit is worth $7000 so a suplied head and the buyers labour he is up to the running prado's price.

Hi guys hey suprathepeg, if i were you and i was looking for one of those machines i would definately talk to crushers, he is supplying the head and 2 , two units , you cant beat that any where and that man knows his stuff and with he wont steer you wrong.
The reason my first one was 14,000 because when i got it, that was what they were going for, and i will speak for myself, "I really didnt know much , my eyes lit up when i saw coils and a small diesel" so if you want one or two i would talk to crushers

anyway, when we move to Ontario those 2 trucks will make great winter beaters... i don't care much about them so if they rust out...well...they are sacrificial...well at least to me they are. so if they didn't sell, no biggie.

cheers and peace

Let me ask a few technical questions about the prado:
-What standard tranny does it use? If its w56 or r151 then there are easy swap options out there including the late 90s tacoma engines.
-What size are the diffs?
-has anyone done a bodylift on the prado?

If it has the manual it is usually the R151, the auto I don't know what it is.

The diffs are the smaller taco type diff's front and rear

No bodylift but I have a great suspention lift for it ;)

(I think wayne to speak to the ride and off-roading of the suspension).

Cheers,

Michael

That pretty much means the very common 8" diffs which are also quite strong up to 35" tires in the minis.
R151 is a very stout tranny that allows for a relatively easy swap to the 3.4l v6 that is found in the late 90s tacoma and runner. Milage from the 3.4 is pretty good actually close to that of the 2lte and power is good too. It would be interesting to see somebody swap a 3.4 into a prado, you would deffinately find parts quite easily. Probably have to do a body lift and/or fab up some engine mounts.

If one could find a truck for 2k with blown 2lt it would cost about the same to swap in the 3.4 as it would to do the head. The only thing would be finding a wiring map for the Prado.

One thing to keep in mind, just because two trucks have an R151 does not mean the tranfer case or the bellhousing would be the same, I have found this a lot with Toyota some of the same core parts but then they tweak them a bit.

I have 8" diffs from my Troopy and Land Cruiser P/U as well as a few newer 7x series, and even though the carrier is very simiular to the taco the axle housing and axle shaft alone with the all the part from the nuckle out are much more stout than the Taco.

Cheers,

Michael

I feel abligated to talk about a few very cool things about the prado.

It has 4 wheel coil suspension very close the 80 series, so it will ride great off roading.

Also the interiors are pretty nice especially with the way the seats fold up.

Some of the nicer ones like the onces that Wayne has or had came loaded with front and rear lockers as well as e-hub lockers again very cool features.

If you only had to compare the Prado to something like the montero, raider or any of those and it kicks their but ;p

Ok one final note, riding with a mad man doing around 70mph over frozen ground weaving in and out of maple and pine trees in -40c temperature (Riding with Wayne) is a testiment to the handling of the prado

Cheers,

Michael

I'll bet that at least the tranny will be good to go and you could use the bellhousing from a mini. R151s are pretty easy to find.

the prados come only with rear lockers, no factory front lockers in the LJ models.

with that suspension i got from you before the "river shiver" this year i was able to seriously FLY down the trails, i was getting major air and a smooth controled landing. VERY NICE much nicer than the OME i stuck on the wifes daily driver LJ78.
i have about 5 minutes of video that Clarence took as i took off down the trail weaving in and out of trees. the video looks like it is in "fast forward" but it is real time and UNREAL speed for this kind of terrain. the control of the LJ78 is GREAT. the 2LTE performed very well till we hit some very soft deep snow then we hit the red...not good.
i had a grin from ear to ear. the close calls with trees, air over the berms WOW!! what a BLAST!!

anyhow, if it wasn't for the head issues i would absolutely LOVE the LJ78 again... oh well, such is life...

the R151 and R141 are used behind the PZJ7* as well but different imput shafts... the R141 is a great off road tranny since it is the exact same gearing as the H55F (with out the 5th gear). the R151 has too high 1st gear in my books...

cheers

Too high, in my mini I barely need to use 1st. If my gears matched the tire size I may not need it at all lol. In the mini truck world many find the 1st gear in the r151 to be too low.

yep too high.
R151 first - 4.313
R141 first - 4.843

you play your way and i will play mine...

cheers

I thought the mines simply hated the early R series trannies. Something about a part inside not being up to snuff, and them calfing at a higher then anticipated rate. There is a fix, but I can not explain what it is. Wayne, you know?

gb

yep, the reverse gear shaft was weak... something about the revese gear assembly would let go and parts would drop onto the splash guard inside the tranny and then get into the meshing of the gears tearing out something else...
the H55F was the tranny the mines loved...very reliable. even the H151 is frowned upon since they are not holding up either..
