I haven't been able to find a reference for engine serial numbers (they are stamped on the horizontal , flat machined surface of the top deck of the block, just look straight down between the first two inlet manifold pipes (right below #1cyl injector))(you may need to use some steel wool and needle nose pliers to clean the rust off so you can read it...).
However, the block part number is cast midway down the block on the same side, pretty much right behind the fuel pump diaphram body. It's easy to spot. As far as I know, the early 3B's had 11400-5810or 11400-5811 between 10-81 and 09-82, those made between 10-82 and 8-84(or 09-84) had 11400-5812 cast in. These were 3 bearing camshaft models. From 09-84 to 09-85 the number was 11411-58040 and the camshaft had 5 bearings. These engines all had inline fuel pumps.
FYI, my sept 1984 BJ60 has a 11411-58040 block, s/n 0674202 (which, coincidentally does not seem to link to the VIN in any way).
If anyone has a link to engine serial number decoding I'd love to know.
