Can anyone tell me how to tell what year my 3B is? The PO did a motor swap and I need to know for parts. Thanks

Need more details castings marks on engine, colour of the block ,pics would help.
What parts are you replacing most of parts covered the entire duration of its production with no change or little change.

Where are the casting marks? Buying a clutch..pre 85 and post 85 I think.

Engine serial number will be key to engine age.

Clutch if I am correct is the same all years except for 13BT

Spector has two part numbers. One for pre- 85 and a different part number for post- 85???

the pre-85 would be from the BJ42 and 60 the post-85 would be from the BJ70 you will have to determine if the 3B is out of a 42/60 or a 70 series.
Gives us some pics specifically the injection side of the motor I think the 70 is a direct injection fuel system

I haven't been able to find a reference for engine serial numbers (they are stamped on the horizontal , flat machined surface of the top deck of the block, just look straight down between the first two inlet manifold pipes (right below #1cyl injector))(you may need to use some steel wool and needle nose pliers to clean the rust off so you can read it...).
However, the block part number is cast midway down the block on the same side, pretty much right behind the fuel pump diaphram body. It's easy to spot. As far as I know, the early 3B's had 11400-58010or 11400-58011 between 10-81 and 09-82, those made between 10-82 and 8-84(or 09-84) had 11400-58012 cast in. These were 3 bearing camshaft models. From 09-84 to 09-85 the number was 11411-58040 and the camshaft had 5 bearings. These engines all had inline fuel pumps.
FYI, my sept 1984 BJ60 has a 11400-58040 block, s/n 0674202 (which, coincidentally does not seem to link to the VIN in any way).
If anyone has a link to engine serial number decoding I'd love to know.

Wow, thanks alot for the info! I did find that number cast into the block the other day but did not write it down. Tomorrow morning I will check the number to your list and see. I did contact the PO and he said he was pretty sure that it was a pre- 85. Any significant difference between the three and five bearing configuration? Thanks again

Well, a bearing between each pair of cam lobes makes the whole assembly more rigid (therefore the valve timing is more accurately maintained across the rev range), and would also reduce the loading on the camshaft bearings. Perhaps this has something to do with the later engines having inner and outer valve springs as well?

Ok, explain this one. The number cast into my engine is 11411-58030. Any idea?

Hmmm, sorry, I'm assuming it's 11400-58030 (I had typos in my post, too many ones and not enough zeros) as 11400 is the block group major p/n, but 58030... I just ran through almost all the B, 2B and 3B engined vehicles on TOYODIY and no luck, all the 3B's seem to be the (...-580...)10, 11, 12 or 40. Maybe Toyota can help.... it does have 3B cast in the block (same side, just on the other side of the casting plug to the right of the block casting number????
Maybe it's one of the Dihatsu made 3B's I've heard of, anyone actually have one????????????

Can anyone help me discern whether my 3B is pre or post 1985?
