What weight Mobil1 Do You Run??? (1 Viewer)

I was running 10w-40 high mileage, and then switched to 10w-30 syn, mobil1. I now have a more noticable rear main leak as well ( a small drop on the garage floor, intermittently). I am going to go back to the 10w-40 high mileage on my next change. Does anyone use any of the seal additive products, do they work?

There is more oil chain engineering to give you a larger viscosity spread.

Personally, I run random blends of 5-30, 10-30 and 15-50 in Extended Performance oils only based upon sales prices I see. I found 5qt 15-50EP containers for $18 and bought 'em all at the store. After this last change I'm now out and blended in some 5-30EP.

As an aside, the yearly drain then gets put into my Ford commuter car that runs like a top at ~230k miles...

I believe that Mobil 1 either has or will shortly discontinue the 15w50 in Extended Performance. They will offer it in standard synthetic, and claim that it does better in engines with solid lifters (which is why I run the 15w50 in my 3FE - I want all the anti-wear additives I can get but don't buy into adding additional 3rd party additives to my oil, I don't like the idea of mixing compounds).

After having my oil analyzed a few times on my Subaru (ej25 turbo) I run rotella synthetic 5w-40 in it and all my other vehicles. It holds up well for 6000 miles in the subaru and i plan on running it for 10000 miles, or one change a year in the land cruiser. It held up better than mobil 1, castrol, or penzoil, and as well as redline and royal purple for less than half the price.

Always wondered how rotella would do in the subie. I have been using german castrol 0w30 since new but I hear they may stop importing it :frown:

On a side note I also have no leakage any more with the 10w40. I had nothing major to begin with but there was a little seepage in the front main seal(not even enough to puddle).

15-50 with the big napa gold filter. it leaks and uses 1 qt for every 5000 mile oci.

Can you post some analysis #s between the brands that you've mentioned, I would be very curious to compare.

Thanks,

edit: here are the results. sorry for the format.
This was the analysis for my 2005 subaru legacy gt. I know its not a land cruiser, but it's a good example of the protection that the rotella provides, and I haven't had any analysis done on my cruiser yet. Sorry for mentioning castrol, but i guess i never got an analysis on that oil. I ran the GC 0-30 in it once, but couldn't find it anymore.

Oil: Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, 3600 miles on it car at 47k
Filter: PureOne Al 3 Chromium 0 Iron 6 Copper 27 Lead 1 Tin 0 Moly 55 Nickel 1 Manganese 1 Silver 2 Titanium 0 Boron 27 Silicon 11 Sodium 5 Calcium 2797 Magnesium 24 Phosphorous 594 Zinc 681 SUS Visc: 58.9 cST Visc: 9.90 Flashpoint: 375
I didn't run a TBN or TAN this was the first analysis I ran after I bought the car at 40k. I attributed the silicon to the K&K filter. The copper and silver were my main concerns. The only bearings that I am aware of in the engine with silver compounds are the turbo.

Oil: Mobil1 10-30 synthetic, 4000 miles on oil. car at 51k
Filter: K&N Al 4 Chromium 0 Iron 8 Copper 25 Lead 1 Tin 0 Moly 48 Nickel 1 Manganese 1 Silver 1 Titanium 0 Boron 25 Silicon 9 Sodium 5 Calcium 3447 Magnesium 23 Phosphorus 660 Zinc 730 SUS Visc: 55.2 CST Visc 9.3 Flashpoint 360
I was glad to see the silicon go down, but the copper and silver were still concerns. Also the viscosity and flashpoint were lower than I want.

Oil: Royal Purple 5-30, 4000 miles on oil. car at 55k
Filter: Pure1 Al 3 Chromium 1 Iron 8 Copper 6 Lead 0 Tin 0 Moly 74 Nickel 0 Manganese 0 Silver 0 Titanium 0 Boron 10 Silicon 10 Sodium 7 Calcium 1883 Magnesium 241 Phosphorus 684 Zinc 826 SUS Visc 54.1 cST Visc 8.5 Flashpoint 355
The royal purple had the copper and silver where I want them, but the oil seemed to be shearing down far ahead of my expected life span (I was hoping for 8-10k runs on this oil). No doubt a good oil but IMHO not worth the price.

I can't find my analysis for the redline oil, but IIRC it was mostly the same as the royal purple. A good oil but didn't have the longevity I was hoping for.

Oil: Shell Rotells T SYN 5-40, 4000 miles on oil, car at 77k (my second change with this oil)
Filter: Pure1 Al 2 Chromium 1 Iron 6 Copper 3 Lead 1 Tin 0 Moly 65 Nickel 0 Manganese 0 Silver 0 Titanium 0 Boron 22 Silicon 6 Sodium 9 Calcium 984 Magnesium 84 Phosphorus 655 Zinc 784 SUS Visc 70.2 cST Visc 13.08 Flashpoint 405
I was just thrilled by this analysis and promptly decided that this is the oil for me. Still going strong at 4k I plan on doing an analysis at 6k to see if that’s an acceptable interval. I also modified and tuned my car from 180 wheel hp to 230 whp before this interval.

It's been few years now since my HG job.

M1 Five Dubbya Thirdy; No leaks, No high consumption; just perfect.

Used to use the Rottella 15W40 and also tried some 0W 40 and 10W 30 M1s here and there. But that was a while ago; before my HG and front oil seal replacement.

Based on your analysis and because of FAQ's section under Romer's 5 oil favorites..... I decided to try the Rotella 5w-40. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for all the responses.

I purchased my rig one year ago and changed oil immediately to Mobile 1 5W-30 as stated in owners manual. 6000 miles later and I've added about 1 quart of oil during that time.

I will change oil soon to Mobile 1 10W-30 to see if consumption is reduced -- not that I'm concerned about 1 quart every year/6000 miles, but I'd like it to be zero.

On a side note, I switched to the small synthetic Toyota oil filter about 4500 miles ago. My oil still looks quite clean, but what is the recommended changing interval for these filters on these engines? I am not afraid to let the oil go 10,000 miles or 1 year (which ever comes first), but can the filter hang on for that long or should I be changing it at a higher interval?

Thanks.
