I'm rebuilding my front axle and I'm getting ready to install my differential. In conjunction with the gasket, what should I use. I've know there's silicone gasket maker, and gasket shlackel (sp?). Any advice/recommendations? Thanks, SDC

The paper gasket with a light smear of RTV should be fine. I use the ultracopper although it is overkill for this application. You really dont need anything as the torque of the 3rd will seal it down.

i agree, the ultra copper in the spray can is what i use, works great and theres no sealer sqeezing out when done.

Would the spray Permatex gasket sealer work for installing a water pump? Looking for something to hold the gasket in place while trying to install the pump.

it should, the copper is very tacky sticks to anything, i have used it on lots of things with no leaks.

Thanks for the tips...

Found a gasket compound made by Permatex that should do the trick nicely. Just installed the Locking Diff and she looks oh so nice... Now I can start on the knuckles. SDC

you shouldn't need sealer with a gasket except to hold it in place. i use high tack for that.

I haven't been able to figure out which permatex to use and when.. Blue, Black, Copper, Grey. What's the frickin' difference other than color and cost? I see copper will handle more heat.. what else?

I bought the blue 'cause it's cheap.

you will thank me later... it is awsome/ I have 2 Fj 40 in my driveway and not a drop of oil anywhere. This sh*t works, go get some. I bbuy the large cartridge type tube for a caulk gun. $12 and worth every penny.

Funny, this is also discussed today here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=23973

Blue RTV with TEQ gaskets always seem to work well and last a long time...I have a can of that spray copper but haven't found an opportunity to use it yet...maybe its time to lock the front...yeah, I'll definately have to remove the diff then.....
