What transmission fluid for a 99 LC?

Interesting. I just realized there is the Mobil MV ATF (blue bottle, red cap) and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF (grey bottle). Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is what I ordered earlier today. Should I cancel the order and order the Mobil MV ATF? On the product pages linked, it shows MV works with toyota type D-III, is that different than the GM DEXRON IIIH mentioned in the Mobil 1 Synethic ATF product page? Am I just overthinking this or do you think it matters?
No, go with the top shelf M1. You'll love it.

In the past decade, I've purchased a few 200,000+ mile Japanese automatics with severely neglected transmissions. In one case, the fluid looked more like black motor oil than transmission fluid. The car had 230,000 miles and I suspect the transmission fluid had never been changed. To get the rehabilitation process going without sending the patient to the morgue, I slowly introduced new fluid by doing a drain and refill, driving 200 miles, then "rinse and repeat" until I had exchanged 12 quarts.

After the fluid exchanges cleared up the old mess, then I changed the filter screen that was surprisingly clear considering where it started. This case happened in 2011. So we have been lucky to get 10 years out of that car and transmission. I can't guarantee this process will work for anyone else. I can report that I have personally had success with slowly introducing new fluid into old neglected automatics.
Sure can't hurt to play it safe.

Bumping this with a question on ATF after reading:

I have a '99 and transmission was serviced 60k/5 years ago. I tow, mountain driving, and offroad so meet severe duty criteria and want to do an exchange.

I have 14 qts of Toyota WS purchased to do a 4Runner and am stuck with the fluid.

Is WS not compatible in the earlier transmissions? I have Maxlife ATF as well as access to Mobile One Syn ATF. But interested if the 98-02 trans are OK to use WS as well?

I would not use WS in place of Dex III. It's synthetic and has better low-temperature performance, but even T-IV isn't recommended by Toyota for your year truck, much less WS. It may not hurt the transmission, but they cost of finding out is very high.

Good call! I'll be making someone a great deal on some WS soon it looks like!

I use Valvoline Maxlife Red Full Synthetic fluid. I dropped the pan and installed a new OEm filter yesterday! Dropping pan will take 7.7 quarts of fluid.

Do you have the part number for the filter? I’ve got a 99 if that makes a difference

Here you do. Got it from Decatur toyota. Free shipping above $75 and no tax out of AL.

I think 98 to 01 uses the same transmission. I installed a cork gasket. Check the number of 10 mm bolts in the pan. I had 19. There is another model with 20 bolts. When tightening the 10 mm bolts on pan, just be gentle.

Losen the dipstick 12mm bolt bracket on the side of the transmission to make the removal and installation of the pan easy.
