So, after sitting for several years, I finally was at the point of firing up the rig yesterday. Followed all the pre-start protocols and after putting a little gas in the carb, she fired up briefly. BUT, there was smoke coming from the choke cable at the carb and the cable was hot.

This is the weirdest mystery to me, anyone have any thoughts?

You probably have a bad or no ground between the engine and frame.
The starter is most likely grounding through the cable.
Run a ground directly from batt neg to engine block and see if it makes a difference.
probably should go through all the wiring and clean connections while looking for rusty ground connections.

Thanks everyone. I know it's not good, but I'll start with the ground connections and make sure they're solid.
