What the hell does hj85 stand for? (1 Viewer)

$4k for a 3x locked truck without rust and that looks clean is a good deal. Asking them to go even lower is pretty unlikely in my book. It really comes down to, do you want an 80 to go out and have fun and enjoy owning or do you want to try and make money on an old used ‘90s SUV. If it’s the first you’ve got a good start. If it’s the latter you’re in the wrong place. Lol

I'm not looking to make anything on it , just want to make sure that I dont drop a bunch of money into maintenance wise and still be stuck with a fj with absolutely no value to it .

I would want to see the VIN sticker on the door to see the K294 before I assumed it was triple locked based on the word of the seller...

I suppose everyone’s definition of “no value” is different but I don’t see a point in the near future where a 3x locked, clean, low or rust free truck goes for less than $4k no matter what title it has. Hell you could get $6-7k for it in just the big parts.

I suppose everyone is different. If you haven’t owned an 80 yet, please take the time to read Cdan’s post on 80 series cost. You might be buying the truck for $4k but it was a $54k truck in the 90’s and parts and labor reflect that.

Ran the vin, its lockered, or was at least from the factory . Definitely understand parts cost , as ive owned numerous old bikes that I've since gotten out of due to safety reasons n i.e, cell phones. Again not looking to make money , need a rear in the gear truck . I own a 13 jk 2 dr that doesn't haul s*** because of size , and I like to camp in the back when I'm riding solo . I have pop up that jk pulls when the boss is along unless the fjz will do the trick .

Coming from k5 blazers , making money on vehicles has never been my prime objective . But losing my ass sucks lol

It’s $4000 or $4500. If, hypothetically, selling it for $2500 two years down the road is “losing your ass” than you have no idea what you are getting yourself in to.

I would say the majority of people on here would not consider losing a grand or two “losing your ass”.

You gotta pay to play. This isn’t the Heep world where there are a thousand different aftermarket parts available for pennies.

Man you guys up north... I feel so sorry for you. A rust free, triple locked, 250k+ truck is 4k here tops with a clean title. Salvage title would be parts value. I just passed on a triple locked 93 for 2500 because of some rust.

My triple locked diesel with 115k ended up costing 17k cad by the time I had my hands on it. That is seen to be a reasonable price.

All these posts stressing about sub 5k vehicles? Just $#!+ or get off the pot.

Looks like I took a s***. Just mailed the check along with delivery fees.

In fairness, isn’t $17k CAD about the same as $5k USD?

Sounds like youre screwed now :flipoff2:

But is it triple lockered? :D

Enjoy it. Dont fret. I dont get the pre purchase blues about resale of a vehicle anyways.

But fix those wheels.... at least the oddball ugly(er) one and make sure all tires are the same size and wear depths. Awd doesnt like mismatched rubber.

Ran the vin(didn't have door sticker when I bid) it's a triple locker . Good news i guess, I'm in it for cheap , which is going to allow me a another one possibly.

Op, Like said earlier. Don't stress, the deal is done, get the truck and do an assessment once you can physically look it over. Make a listing o what needs addressed and what you would liek to address. Once you have that you can figure how much money you are comfortable putting into the vehicle.

If it ends up being more than you target you have the option to sell (but disclose the true nature of the truck) or if you can turn a wrench you could just part it out for the low hanging fruit and then sell the rest to a salvage yard. The axles and associated wiring for the lockers would net you a good chunk of the purchase price and if the body is truly clean and rust free you could part the panels. This still leave the drivetrain and interior. Remember there are many NLA parts for the 80 and people want/need them. If you have the time and space I cannot see where you wouldn't at least be able to break even if going the part out route.

I'm not interested in buying the truck, I just want to know why it is called an HJ85. I have never heard of an 85 series and it does not have an H motor.

Jesus Christ, dude. Seven years later and you still don’t realize the HJ85 in the VIN isn’t the model number?
OMG!! You found the only two HJ85 Land Cruisers in the world!
Mine has HJ 85 in the VIN too. Lots of them do.

I realize it just fine, thanks!

I am asking WHY, what is the historical context of breaking the typical nomenclature? A question that I haven't seen an answer to and your reply does nothing to help with.

VIN code doesn’t seem to equal model designation.

1995-older 1FZ 80s seem to have a DJ81.
96-97 LCs seem to have a HJ85
96-97 LX450s seem to have a HJ88.

That’s just at a quick glance through a listing of VINs
