Broke the fj80 steering box sector shaft and would like a stronger one. Is there any simple replacement ( some mounting fabrication is expected ofcourse) Maybe a 2500 truck ? any body done it? Thanx, Larry

easiest replacement is a 100 series sector shaft.

The two best answers to your question have been posted. 105 shaft and assist. It takes about an hour to rebuild the box and port it for assist. There's a thread on the Marlin Crawler forum that has the best write up ever on rebuilding and porting the 80 series box.

ok, will do!

Do you're home work before to jump on the hydro assist thing. That path is fraught with peril if not done right.

Hydro assist is very straight forward and easy, assuming it is done properly. Full Hydro steering is fraught with peril.

I don't think you really need a 100 series sector shaft if you go hydro assist. Or at least I haven't broken one, yet...?

i bought the 105 shaft, pitman arm, and new seals from cruiserdan and sent my box and those parts to west texas offroad. they rebuilt the box/installed the parts and did the porting of the steering box for me. was only about $500 including the steering ram, hoses, and mounts.

Doing it myself ran just over $200; rebuild kit, ram, lines, line chafe guards, and porting. I think the 80 box is about as simple as it gets in regards to rebuilding and porting.

IMHO there is a lot less chance of problems with full hydro. With hydro assist done wrong you can wind up with the hydro battling with the PS, I have seen it turn out very badly.

Well, I got a 97 box and before I install it, does anyone no of a place that will drill and port it in the Sacramento area? Getting this heavy ass box sent to Texas and back seems like a pain in the ass. If I can't find a place local, I think I will just go stock again. Larry

Do it yourself! Seriously, it is very easy to do.

I guess I will check out the youtube video again. I just hate to screw something up that is so critical.

I thought it was pretty easy, as easy as rebuilding the box. Hardest part of the whole thing was not fxxxing up the teflon rings.

Porting box, I just drilled and tapped based on a picture off pirate, worked out good. Built lines myself just -6 hose and -6 JIC to npt fittings into the box and then -6 jic to -6 boss oring fittings at the 100$ surplus center ram I bought. I was in it for very little.

I also went ahead and got adapters for the box and pump to convert to -6 jic and ran -6 hydraulic lines on everything with jic ends. I have a couple different length lines and that way if I need to I can run them between whatever if anything blows. Plus a lot of the dudes I wheel with run basically the same -6 jic -6 lines and like I said I have adapters to convert to male or female or female to female, male to male, flat face to jic, etc... but it was all free so...

If you go hydro you'll probably also want to look into bigger cooler maybe and a larger reservoir.

I have a decent sized remote reservoir and that ram moves a lot of fluid. All the way collapsed it's about 3/4 way up, fully extended and it drops a ton.

Course then theres pump mods or different pump...

I have a cummins stock pump, so I modded that and then welded a nipple on to the stock reservoir and ran a line to an aluminum remote reservoir... I'm into it cheap but I sourced a lot of stuff for free. Still it shouldn't cost that much and it's the right way to do it especially on a rig like yours.

Not only will it be stronger but you'll be happier with it when you're wheeling. So much easier pushing 40s in the rocks and snow and mud.
