Good morning - hope everyone had a good weekend.

My ‘68, picking it up today actually, doesn’t have meal doors or top. Assuming I want to pick those up rather than “just” going with soft doors / top what price range should decent used door and top go for?

Just want to make sure I’m not getting taken advantage of or being unfair to a seller.

Thanks!

Thanks for the response - appreciate the ranges.

What year doors and tops inter have with on a ‘68? I think the doors changed around ‘74 but that could be total fiction I made up.

Thanks!

Guess you got this covered Johnny. I will add later front doors are easy to add. Been running 79 doors on my 68 since 1983. The rear ambulance doors the spare is on the wrong side to open a door without swinging the spare out first. The tub changed enough to require a lot of body work to add ambulance doors correctly.

Thanks, I’ll look for a write up on the door mod.

May decide to go the Bestop route since I live in SoCal but this helps me understand a roughy budget and options if I go a more OEM route.

EDIT - would the OEM metal doors give me much more wind / weather protection than the Bestop ones? My guess is better but not massively so?

Is your rig an FST (Factory Soft Top)?

Never had a best top on a FJ40 only vinyl top on original bows with OEM soft doors. The hard top is quieter. Going hard top verses soft top would depend on how you plan to us it. If you want to run it without a top a soft top is easier to take off. Being in S. CA probably won't be in cold country as much. Easier to heat and cool a hard top.

another option would be OEM hard doors, real steel bows and a Trollhole soft top.

if you are near Burbank, I think Mark's Off Road has a collection of hard doors to choose from.

I am such a noob, don’t even know for sure about the OEM configuration. I don’t think so.

Thanks for the referral, I will give them a call.

The weather down here is pretty friendly, occasionally wet in the winter but never that cold and it gets pretty warm in the summer with sun protection being a real consideration.

I doubt I will use it in any sort of extreme weather.

I should also add that it’s not one for the pursuits since it has a GM V8 swap already so I’m not overly focused on making it original, just usable.

Thanks again for the thoughts and remedial education. I kind of just jumped in!

So in a rare moment of potential thoughtfulness, it occurred to me that if I start a trip with a hard top and metal doors on and then decide I want to take them off that’s a bit of an issue trailside. If simply have the soft top and doors that would be a whole lot more flexible once you’re out on the dirt And if I decide that I want some sun protection I’d end up having to buy a soft top at that point to bring along anyway, right?

If you think you will use it a lot without a top I would go the soft top route and then try to find the hard top and doors later. You won’t enjoy taking a hard tip in and off regularly

Thanks - thinking sun protecting might be a bigger driver than wind/water.

Top is pretty heavy I take it?

Heavy and awkward. Too many times I’ve been out and had a rain shower pop up or it is 20 degrees colder driving home than it was when I left in the morning. For those that enjoy an open roof fj40 a soft top is an advantage. I would definitely keep an eye out for a hard top and doors.

Thanks.

Maybe OEM doors and soft top would be a good combo?

When I was looking for doors 3-4 years back it was easier to find the pre 74 doors. I believe it’s said they used a thicker gauge metal or treated the metal differently before paint at he factory so they don’t rust out as bad as later models sheet metal.

Johnny c price post looks like what I’ve seen the last few years. He gave you some good info

Deals pop up and as always with old cruisers see in person if you can. I spent 750 on doors that looked good in pics and when I got them I still had to pay a welder to repair rust that was under paint.

I would post a wanted add on your local area mud or even Craigslist and Be patient more always come forsale. Also be careful buying from someone not in person. I was trying to buy doors from a guy who after alittle research was ripping people off for cruiser parts that was out of Tennessee so your far from that.

Just saw your in SoCal good sheetmetal should be easier in that part of the country.

It may be a long shot but look for mark of marks offroad on here he’s a reputable vender on here which means he hasn’t a good reputation on selling and helping us cruiser heads. He may have some doors or point you in the right direction. I know he’s in Cali just not sure which part Venders and sponsors of this forum are the people to buy from for landcruiser stuff.
