What parts are in the power steering seal kit #04446-60080?

ToyotaDon: assuming the top photo shows the replacement bearing and the bottom two photos show the used original bearing? By noisy you mean the typical pump whine, and if so did the whine go away after the rebuild? How does the used bearing feel; smooth, notchy? How many miles on the pump? Which seals did you use, Toyota or aftermarket, Gates, Edelmann??

Actually the bearing is not lubed by the PS fluid. It is on the engine oil side of the seal.
...

:whoops:, yep, on the motor oil side, but still will be oil lubed. The steel shields don't seal, so any oil running over it will lube it. The seals don't seal well or for long, so :meh:. I have rarely replaced the bearing in this application, most are like new.

The replacement bearing is not pictured, it is already in use. I just took the pic of the box for reference.

I can pick up that bearing, spin it, and hear noise & feel roughness. Maybe, as Kevin is saying, that's just because it doesn't have any oil in it, but I didn't want to take the chance.

There is still a whine after the rebuild, but I haven't put a stethoscope on it to say whether it's the P/S Pump or Generator. This rig has over 250K on it, from the 243K when I bought it May 2010.

I used a Toyota kit, and the only things I got extra were the bearing and the pressure union gasket. Now I'm remembering that I bought a used pump on MUD and rebuilt that one so I had less down time. If you're interested, I could put the removed pump up for sale, for someone else to do the same thing.

FYI, the bearing is available from Toyota as P/N 90363-17016 at $27.70 list price. The pressure union gasket is P/N 44327-30030 at $2.76.

ToyotaDon: thanks, good to know that the power steering pump shaft bearing is available.

Powderpig: thanks also, as you said, the steel shielded bearing. What had me confused is the photo showing a bearing with a black rubber seal, so that one was a non-OEM replacement.

Tools: I also wondered how that bearing is lubed; would the grease stay in there for years and hundreds of thousands of miles or would engine oil splash onto or into it?? IDK.

So maybe we have a choice?? The original type shielded bearing that lasts forever or a sealed bearing like the nachi 6203-2nse9?? Found a link to that bearing on nachi's European web site.

I asked Gates what the dimensions were of the components of their 348407 power steering pump seal kit. Here is their response:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The rubber used for these o-rings is Buna-N. Here are the components of the kit"

O-ring 3.01 ID x 0.12 thick
O-ring 2.22 ID x 0.07 thick
O-ring 1.11 ID x 0.07 thick
O-ring 0.77 ID x 0.06 thick
O-ring 0.45 ID x 0.06 thick
Seal w/steel spring 0.62 ID x 0.33 thick Lock wire 2.21 ID x 0.12 thick Lock wire 0.56 ID x 0.08 thick Snap ring 1.35 ID x 0.06 thick
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Converting the above inch dimensions to metric I came up with the numbers below, but don't know the exact OEM dimensions, FWIW.

O-rings:

76.454 x 3.048 mm

56.388 x 1.778 mm (3)

28.194 x 1.778 mm

19.558 x 1.524 mm

11.43 x 1.524 mm

Seal: 15.748 ID x 8.382 mm wide/thick

Lock wire: 56.134 x 3.048 mm

Lock wire: 14.224 x 2.032 mm

Snap ring: 34.29 x 1.524 mm

The Toyota O-ring that seals the pump to the block apparently is a red rubber compound but in this kit it appears they all are made of the same Buna-N rubber??

FWIW: found this site that has a ton of information on O-ring material selection, compatibility with various fluids, temperatures, etc.

Lots of things could cause this, including the belts.

The ones that I have had apart, had oil dripping/seeping out. I doubt that the grease lasts long, is likely washed out by the oil. IMHO this is a good thing, oil is a better lube.

The Toyota pump to block o-ring is likely silicone, the one in the aftermarket kits is black, appears to be buna. IMHO, :meh:, it doesn't matter, have had good results with the aftermarket.

When I did the first one, years ago, no aftermarket kit was available. I measured all of the o-rings, was able to source metric o-rings in alternative compounds (viton/silicone/etc), but the seal fails about as often as the o-rings and about that time the return hoses get hard. They typically go well in excess of 100K mi, the kit is cheep, relatively easy job, it's good time to inspect the bearing, replace hoses, etc. IMHO, slap the kit in, replace the hoses and drive happy for another 10yrs or so!:hillbilly:

Agree, if the bearing doesn't feel 100% replace it.

Don't forget the pressure line gasket, 44327-30030.

Get the O Ring and Dual Copper Washer (One Piece) at your Dealership.
Compare shipping Price + Parts if ordering online vs Local.

If your hose from tank to pump is original I would replace it with a piece of Gates and 2 new clamps while your at it.
Get a quart of Synthetic Power Steering Fluid while your at it.

Have Nitrile Gloves?
Have 2 cans brake cleaner?
Have a piece of clean carboard to take pump apart and label for reassembly?
Have a 2 or 3 Prong Puller to get off Gear?
Have a few pieces of wood to hold shafts and gear in vice to avoid damage?

I too bought a new bearing and mine was fine at nearly 200K Miles.
The Bearings are bathed in oil constantly, so about the only way they should fail is contamination.
I bet 95% of disassembled bearings are fine.

The Gates kit is proven to meet application (hard to argue with success), but if you are running Toyota Tires, by all means go Toyota.

Working on this myself currently. Bought a bearing without the steel before I realized the OEM was steel shielded. Has anyone experienced a problem with the regular rubber seal bearings?

I did my pump rebuild about a year ago, the kit i used was the Gates kit. Just as an FYI, the Gates kit i used came with the "big" O ring that most members buy from the dealership.

I'm thinking about the power steering pump seal kit. The shaft bearing apparently is not available as a Toyota part so was hoping someone had an old pump laying around and could check the numbers on the bearing.
As mentioned, no bearing, but if also doesn't have mounting o ring or the seal for the high pressure line.

As mentioned, oem kit has no bearing, but if also doesn't have mounting o ring or the seal for the high pressure line.(it shows 2 in parts catalog bit it's thankfully a 1 piece design). The gates kit is the same except it has the mounting o ring and two copper hi pressure washers .

Do a filter change because it's a lot easier to get to everything with the oil filter out of the way
