I just sold my FJ40 and picked up a '97 LC from the Denver area. PO was running Mobil 1 10w-40 syn. 188k on the clock. I have been reading up on the main tech board and in the faq, and it seems like everyone has an opinion on what works best for their vehicle, and many have preferences based on where they are at (cold vs. warm climates). So, with that in mind, what oil/weight is everyone running in Southern California?

Thanks in advance for everyone's contribution.

Penzoil 10-30 high mileage. Truck maybe burns one quart every 5K which is just fine. Never have bothered to switch to syn because the truck doesnt' leak and I'm not complaining!

Sounds good, thanks guys. I ended up picking up some Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-40 with a Mobil 1 filter to stay somewhat consistant with what the PO was doing for now. Wal-Mart was running a special on a 5-qt jug for $21. If the 80 likes this stuff, I may go back and stock up for that price.

Thanks again.

Amsoil is good except a bit pricey. I use chevron 15-40 on mine. Chevron is good oil and cheaper than synthetic

I have always heard good things about Amsoil products. Where would one find their products? Thanks.

you can find them through independent amsoil dealers. On their website, you can search for local dealers in your area. I established a prefered customer account with them without becoming a dealer for a yearly fee. I pay $31 gallon but I believe the prices are a bit higher now due to fuel costs. Ae oil filters are about $12. I believe the costs are worthwhile if you own a lot of vehicles.

Dino

I use whatever the quick lube shop has, with a coupon for $17.99 for an oil change and filter it is not worth me taking the time to change myself every 3K and dispose of it and clean up afterwards. Some will flame this idea and say why trust them and put in inferior products, but time is more important to me anyway. Now I would not trust the quick lube shop for much else however. After reading a lot on the 80's site I think you will get mixed results around the nation. Some have had increased leaks with synthetics and switched back, some claim 1-3 miles per gallon better with Sythetic. I think regular maintenance is the most important thing including overlooked items such as new gaskets, and seals. No doubt sythetics are better and last longer , but since the 80 was designed for 3rd world dino oil I think if you change it regularly it is more important than the type anyway.

I run Mobil 1 10-30 and change it ever 8,000 miles. That's the benefit of using the good stuff. It's less expensive then running the cheap stuff because you can run it twice as long. I do it myself and spend about 35 bucks an oil change, that’s including the Mobil 1 oil filter.
