What kind of Cruiser did I see?

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the right area for this but I figured I'd get more response here then on YT or TTORA etc. Yesterday I was driving down I-5 and got passed by this sweet looking LC, it was unlike any I'd ever seen. It was right hand drive to begin with. It was square ish like the old school cruisers and had round headlights, it was a 2 door but was pretty long, looked kinda like it inspired the 1st gen runner as it looked like the rood behind the front doors should come off (but didn't) the rear windows were square. The tailgate looked as if it split in the middle kinda like a barn door but one side was larger and the spare was on the tailgate. It was also turbocharged, didn't have any other badging other then Toyota and turbo but I'm pretty sure it was some type of Cruiser. Sorry I don't have a pic it would probably make this easier.
    Thanks for any help!!! :)

Prolly a 7X (70, 75, 78) series. Did it look like one of these?

Probably a BJ74 like mine. It's like a BJ70, but about a foot longer, with a removable FRP top, and a turbo direct injected version of the 3B called a 13B-T under the hood.

Poltergeist: The pic of that black 70 series that you posted is an LJ70, which would have the smaller 2L-T engine and probably the Hilux running gear.

Stone- It looked like yours. Were those brought into the US? If not how hard are they to track down?
    Thanks!

No, these are JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) trucks that we Canucks are lucky enough to legally import into Canada. These trucks were never made available originally to the US or Canada by Toyota. Unfortunately, American importation laws seem to be a lot stricter than Canadian ones, and the straightforward answer to your question is "no, these are not importable to the US for now". But that doesn't mean that with perseverance, $$$, and ingenuity, that it's not possible.

The BJ70, you may already know, were originally imported by Toyota into Canada. These ones you are able to import into the US. If you're interested in this series of Land Cruisers, I suggest you hang with us in the International Forum. :) Lots of good info and also good people there.

We can pretty much import anything that is 15 years old or older. Vehicles that are at least 15 years old only have to go through an Out of Province inspection which is fairly cursory. Importing a newer vehicle than that would require it to meet current highway safety standards, which could become quite expensive.

I saw it just north of Mt. Vernon heading south, it had US plates on it. As far as the 70/74 what are the main differences? Sorry for all the questions I'm more familiar with trucks and 4Runners then with LCs.
