Just wondering what everyones is since mine fluxuates so damn much.

In town I am at the 1/3 mark sometimes 1/2.

And on the freeway I am usually at 2/3.

Howdy! Depends on what year/model and what equipment. Might get an aftermarket guage hooked up so you know exactly what the temps are. Old senders and guages are not always real accurate. John

I had a 74 FJ40 that ran a lot cooler than yours seems to. Around town the temp gague hardly moved at all, even in the summer. On the freeway, it would get to less than 1/3rd.

I have a 1973 with an F motor. Mine would run right dead in the middle or on hot days in traffic almost to 3/4. I thought that this was hot but once I put in mechanical gauge it was 180. When it was at close to 3/4 it was like 185. I would just put a mechanical gauge in yours as well. I used to worry that I was running to hot because of other memebers answers to this same question. But a lot of gauges have their marks in different spots.. or don't work properly.

Comparing different factory gauge readings between different rigs is pretty meaningless.

Putareal gauge on the rig to keep an accurate eye on things.

A 2F should run on the thermostat under almost all conditions. 180-190F.

My F155 almost never gets hot enough to open the thermostat theoretically. I've got a mechanical guage that reads between 150-160 when the guage is showing at the half-way mark.

You can also buy a rad thermometer [like the AC guys use to test refrigeration] that is pretty accurate for ~$8 and get a better real-world idea of what your Toyota guage readings correspond to before you get around to replumbing.

I personally would be looking at cooling system upgrades if you're above the 180 mark, starting with a 6 blade plastic fan. If that's not enough, a higher efficiency radiator would be next on the list.

Heat is the worst enemy of the internal combustion engine.

Yes, right to the left of the OEM ECU that came in FJs built after 1954

The polite answer is no, that is a feature that only some modern engines have.

i run a bit hot, but my mechanical guage reads pretty steady, 170 for low to 195 for high.

fj40-1/69, 4 barrel 650 cfm carb, very clean running, passes DEQ.
