I am in the process of changing out the coolant on my FJ60. I ordered an OEM 190 degree replacement thermostat to swap in. I have only bought thermostats for my FJ40 previously and it didn’t have this piece in it.

What is this piece in the picture below, what does it do?

Also, does the thermostat do better in a particular orientation vs another—ie which part of the thermostat is facing forward?

The little hole is there to pass bubbles. The "JIGGLER" is there to help them on their merry way.

The thermostat can be oriented in any direction — just so long as it's not upside down

You know I don't know I've seen it before but it is what it is.
