What is the symptom of needing

    I was wondering if there is a symptom to detect that i need the birfield re-pack done on 97 LC with 119k mi.

    Check the wiper seals on the back of the steering knuckles - if they are excessively greasy or you have streaks on the backside of the rims you need to re-pack. You can also drain the front diff and look at the fluid - if it's silverish your seals are leaking (and it's not a bad idea to change diff fluid at 119K anyway). If all looks well...and they are not clicking your good for a while.

    If they are leaking or clicking. I've seen them on several LC's with 200K miles and they were never done, still not leaking or clicking. Others on this site do them at 60K mile intervals. Some do them more often then that, because they were done, but done incorrectily causing problems and redo's. Some times s*** happens :)
