What is the plastic box in front of (and connected to) the air intake? (1 Viewer)

Hey all, I was cleaning up my intake on my 1993 FZJ80 today. I came across a part in my engine bay that I'm not really sure what it is. It is the plastic box right in the foreground of the picture in this old thread:

The hose that goes from that box to my intake is old and cracking, and I wanted to replace it with the OEM part. That was really the only picture I could find of it online, as it seems that like 90% of FZJ80's don't have this. What is it?

It’s part of the PAIRS system.

'94 - '95 is when the 1fz had some changes that got rid of the PAIR system, which is why not all 80 pics you've seen have it.

The box is like a muffler, it doesn't serve any real emissions function. The PAIR system of course does.

I see, that makes sense. So do a lot of guys remove it? I'm in CA, will I fail smog if I remove it?

I'm in KA too and no you will not fail smog with that box gone. Mine has been gone a good 10 years or more!

The box can go, in fact it is removed when the s/c (that was available) was installed on a PAIR 1fz. You can take a hose straight from the aircleaner to the PAIR system and ditch the box. You might hear a bit more/different noise from in the cab depending on when the PAIR does its thing.

Gotcha, thanks for the help! So to get this straight, I still need a hose from the round intake to where the PAIRS resonator currently goes, I can just delete the box itself?

Also, I'm guessing I would fail smog if I deleted the PAIR system entirely?

^ Yes, hose to bypass box. Remove PAIR and you're tampering with the emission system and likely will fail if the tech looks for it. Leave it along

While I’m at it, do you happen to know what the other plastic box (behind and to the left of, when looking from the front) is? It seems to have a cable that runs from it to the throttle body.
