In addition to the 2 dogs, I also have a Guinea Pig. Not quite a rodent-like as the rat (but not as smart either). He's pretty affectionate for a little pet store animal, and has lived 4 and a half years already.

FWIW, I got in vote #1: Dog

Another vote for dog here. I didn't come up with the whole "Man's Best Friend" thing, but it sure applies. Dogs and humans just socialize well, in general (discounting pits). I like the fact that they can live a long life compared to some other animals. (My cocker spaniel is in his fifteenth year.)

You forgot chickens. I love my dogs and all, but there is somthing special about going out to the hen house in the morning to get a few fresh eggs for breakfast. I raised all the chicks by hand so they are all friendly and like to be petted.

cats, cause you can take off for the weekend to go wheelin and they don't need someone to take care of them.

I like to keep hobos as pets. You can feed them damn near anything, they generally don't get that loud, and will stay in the garage and not make a big mess.

    I agree with Ige..

plus with cats, you don't get this 'I am great, big oversized ego 'thing going because of how your dog treats you. Somedays, with a cat, you are just a can opener and there's no one trying to confuse you otherwise ;)

Dave, never, ever forget that YOU own the cat--not vice versa.

Dogs #1 but I give a second on hand raised chickens. Mine actually liked to sit on my lap and be petted. I also raised pigeons for a few years which was even better than chickens.

Then you're not cleaning them right. You have to take them out into the yard and hose them down once or twice a week. If you've got a pressure washer, even better. Also, when you get them into the garage, you have to make sure you've got them tied down - don't let them have more than 15ft of rope on their harnesses, otherwise they'll get into things.

    You backyard hobo breeder!

My argument against cats is this:

If you die in your home and your dog is with you, he will wimper next to your body until he starves to death.

If you die in your home with your cat, he will eat your dead body in order to stay alive.
