For all you Fj and BJ history buffs

OK. So I found out that where I am (BC Canada) there is part of the Motor vehicle Regulations that state

11 The vehicle shall comply with section 19.02 of the regulations with regard to size and dimension.
Doors — Doors shall be installed in a vehicle where the vehicle was manufactured with doors.
The doors with which a vehicle is equipped shall be in good working order, and any hinge, latch or handle must not be broken, missing or inoperable.
The doors shall not be warped, twisted or weakened to the extent that a slight jar will open them.
A door shall be capable of being opened or closed with normal effort.

OK my question is. Soft top FJ/BJ. Did they come with soft doors? If so then that would be an option. Just like up to 1986 Jeep CJ's had doors as an option. So the judge ruled that because of that, you have that option.
I know hard tops came with doors, but then again was that an option?

If this is the case that Toyota had the doors on these models listed as an option. It gives me (and everyone else in BC) the option of running without doors.

Anybody know the history or factory options to this? And have the old brochures? I'm going to bug the dealers here and see what I can find. But sometimes if they aren't selling me a car they don't really give a care.

Thanks

Mike

every photo i have seen shows a hardtop with doors and a softtop with doors .i dont beleive they were and option.the doors were removable and a lot of older cruisers hard or softop came with straps for when the doors were off.the factory softop has a special hinge so the door is easily removed .i have those hinges on all my hardtops so i can remove the doors easilly.i think you will find the factory brochures have photos of doors on and doors off hope the judge sees it your way good luck

Early cruisers 72 or so and before were available from the factory without any top (hard or soft). I am not sure when they stopped offering. Ping JohnnyC.

YES, soft top 40's came with soft doors mostly as an option

64-65 ish

I am sure I have others somewhere in my piles of old Cruiser lit

Any idea what year that poster is? And did they stop in "72

smells like an early-to-mid sixties poster to me. Textured sides, vent on windshield frame, round signal lamps.
You may be able to say that the FJ40 series began in the 1950's, and had a doorless, topless option, since you're driving a vehicle model that is some 50-ish years old, the doorless option is "grandfathered in" meaning the doorless option supercedes 1970's era road safety laws.

just a dumb idea, there.

What year are you refering to,what year do you have.
You can't curb the regulations if you have say a 1970-84 since they all were sold in Canada with the doors this was not sold as a option.
Maybe a real early model came like that as a option but can't be certain and a brochure is just a peice of promo liteture just because they show it without a roof and doors does not mean it sold that way,who in their right mind in Canada would buy a LC with no doors how would you keep the polar bears out.

My 1975 FJ40 (USA) soft-top came stock with soft doors.

Is the DMV (or your equivalent) actually giving you s*** about this, or are you just anticipating problems that aren't there?

i dont recall seeing any thing in the 70's for topless 40's w/option doors...

your year would have been hardtop or FST ...not topless as an option.

but...if you bring the ad that landpimp posted...it would seem it was an option...but...that would be lying a bit

Yes they actually are. Not me individually but the guys with Jeeps they are after. The Jeep guys take their doors and tops off, then they get a warning to put them back on. If they get caught again they get an inspection order. There is an exception year for Jeep CJ because they were sold with doors as an option. And that's what I wish to find out is if the doors were listed as an option.

in almost all years land cruisers were sold with door straps...as they were intended to be driven with the doors off.

here in nys as long as you have side mirrors its all good...are these jeepers driving without side mirrors?

Yup the Jeepers are forgeting the mirrors. I agree the Land Cruisers were intended to be without doors, but it's a matter of being able to prove that they were an option/intended so that if you were fined and fought it a judge could agree with you.
