Been reading on replacing radiator --- have some corrosion and seep on upper PS radiator. Threads say to replace PHH and FHH and do a compression check to see if head gasket is OK. I have 190K on my 93. I purchased it with 179K a few years ago. Not a daily driver until this weekend.

The pesky heater hose is behind the motor. Theres some good threads on the topic.

Sent from my Pandora box, ya peckerwoods.

PHH is on the drivers side just above the starter.

Check out the FAQ section at the top of the main page, LOTS and LOTS of info!

Just replaced my PHH yesterday after discovering all the antifreeze leaking from my LC. Simple job, only thing that makes it hard is low visibility and you've got to have long arms with small hands to gain access to the clamps and whatnot.. took me 3 hours with simple garage tools.

Thanks for help

Well, now that I have read the FAQS you guys have me pretty freaked! Wondering if I have a head gasket failure in the making.

Radiator was flushed yesterday but vendor could not get much out due to poor suction. He only put ~ 1 gallon back in of the 15 quarts that it needs. I took it to a different store and he was not able to get good suction either. He was more knowledable and looked over the radiator more closely (was just doing preventive maintenence on radiator). He showed me area of corrosion in upper PS of radiator but he did not think it to be "bad" and drivable. He thought he could see some "metal flake" in the antifreeze and thought the PO may have added stop leak at some time.

I do not have overheating issues, no antifreeze in the oil, but the rig has 190K miles on it. I priced out the
1.) radiator at $650 (OEM)
2.) Lower hose at $12.50 (OEM)
3.) Upper hose at $12.50(OEM)

Thought that before I invest I should check the HG out. Very controversial in FAQs discussion between Honk and Powerhead. Will check for bubbles in reservoir but elsewhare they say to do a leak down test. Powerhead says this will only work if it is a "bad" HG failure and that the "bubble test" is good -- if you don't have any other system leaks. I put a new cap on the system also.

Regardless, thanks for the help! I will probably do a compression test 1st and go from there.

Thoughts?

No one ever checks it. I asked about mine and we took the driver's side tire off and put it up on the rack. There was Toyota red all over it.

To determine if your head gasket is failing, there is a test kit you can pick up at AutoZone. You can also remove your spark plugs and look to see if any of them are red at the end. If they are, you are leaking fluid from your head gasket and will have to change it inevitably.

I just changed mine. It is about the only thing really major that goes wrong with these engines. About 20 to 25% of them have the problem at some point. I plan to keep the truck permanently so I fixed it.
