I'm look to replace my outdoor watch.

Any recommendations?

I currently use the solar casio pathfinder which has been good, but I'm looking to update it.

I like that is never needs a charge.
Critical features i use are solar, compass, barometer, alarm, timer, altimeter, tides.

I was looking at the new Garmin's they have built in gps now which links to inreach and they also have solar. The 7x seems to have everything except of night vision compatibility.

7x

Instinct solar

new casio path finder

can't answer the question personally, but on a side note I will say that I was surprised to see that there a lot of folks out there on the Internet who are as crazy or more about watches as we are about cruisers. Loads of reviews, comparisons, and whatnot.

I have a Garmin Instinct and I like it a lot more than I thought I would. Since buying it I basically haven't touched any of my non-smart watches. Using it takes some getting used to but is intuitive once you have learned the system.

I used it a lot hiking in the mountains last summer and it seems to do what it's advertised to do, though I don't see it as a true replacement for a dedicated GPS. I use it to track my workouts as well, but I find the heart rate sensor leaves something to be desired when lifting weights.

Here you go, I love watches too but can't see myself paying all that money. If money was no issue I would buy this.

I've been eyeing one of the Garmin Fenix watches, probably won't ever buy one but my main question is how long something like that lasts. Smart phones are decent for about 2 years or so and the battery starts to degrade. I haven't heard much info on garmin watches. Can a user expect 5 to 7 years out of one before it starts acting up?

Currently I have the Casio pro-trek, and it's 11 years old and I wear it daily.
The Casio I like the Tide levels and the Barometer which has saved me from being socked in the rain many times.
The new model doesn't look much different al all.

Thanks for the youtube link !

I have the non-solar instinct, and like it a lot. The only thing that would make it better is if it had solar, which wasn't an option IIRC when I got mine, and a pulse oximeter.

I use everything that you listed on it, daily, except for tides. Even without solar, battery life is pretty good. I charge it every 1-1.5 weeks.

Thanks to everyone for all the pointers.

LOL .. I actually had a Timex when I was a kid.

I went with the Garmin Solar.

BTY after I decided it as difficult to find available.

I'd recommend either the Garmin Fenix or a Seiko "00-something" automatic. Or both.

I love that the Garmin can store and display topo maps of the entire world, among other cool features. It's my go-to these days for everyday use and foot-powered adventures.

I love that the Seiko is an understated, reliable, Japanese workhorse that is both rugged and good looking. Kinda like an LC.

damn, what's wrong with the sun? it comes up...GET THE F UP! n have breakfast. high in the sky....oh, better have some lunch. it sets...supper time, nighty night. also gives you compass points...at the same time without having to push buttons to change settings.
oh, it's overcast? just relax, you'll still get the basic time frames. compass points? again, just relax, sooner or later one of the celestial orbs will give you a reading.
can't lose a $300.oo(or what ever) time piece off your person that way. old school? you bet :flipoff2:

Wow, I suppose you also know how to use a secant? and "your" sun tells you the air pressure change when you down in some valley or dry wash?

nope, don't even know what a secant is. why do i need to know air pressure change? especially when our washes up here run wet

type-o sextant.

So anyways...

I travel a bit and don't always bring a pocket gps, as some places I go it's not even allowed to carry a gps... Maybe I should update my location to Earth.. LOL.

The tactical is really cool but lately i have not had a need for night vision or the erase button.

Have been using the Garmin 7x and it's nice. The GPS is not super actuate but it will get you back to where you want to go. It seems to be within 25'.

it's way beyond the barometer, compass, but also measures heart rate, breathing, O2 levels, sleep quality, stress levels, and can pair to a dog or other location device.
Excellent for work outs.
Plus this would be a great back up if your gps failed. Plus huge numbers easy to read.
Have not had to charge it yet and currently says 89 hours remaining.

I had a gps in my FJ40 .. and some folks laughed as what do you need that for? ... well they found out trying to cross some large dry lakes in pitch black. LOL
This was before gps's were in vehicles and most aircraft.

Not as good tech wise as he iphone watches, but better on reliability and charging,

Thanks again for the video.. the reviews, and help deciding.

I've run the same Garmin Fenix for the last 4 years...been all over the world with it, trained and completed 3 full Ironman triathlon races and several shorter ones. Hunt with it, fish with it, hell i only take it off to charge it. I don't even know how many miles this thing has on it. Only have replaced the band twice. Highly recommend and will replace with one when this finally goes Tango Uniform.
