On of my 315 Toyos, which was 6 months old and had only one significant wheeling trip and about 2K miles on it, has damage to the sidewall (see pics).

I had not noticed and when I sold them to a local 80 owner as I was going to 37" Trxus he noticed when stacking the tires in his garage.

I don't think this is offroad damage to get a linear slice like that (it's not a tear from being up against a rock for example), it looks like the sidewall split? Any tire experts out there have any idea? I am trying to arm myself for going back to Discount Tire to get Toyo to warranty it.

Thanks!

Be nicer to people and they wont slash your tires ;) J/k.

But seriously could they have been cut?

That sucks, man. Could it be a slice from like a box cutter? You know with the razor blade in it. It looks like a fairly straight crack. Bummer!

i dunno but you are a great guy for helping out the buyer get a new tire. big props, I would love to do business with someone that has your mentality

I am wondering. I would have thought I would have noticed this, I check out my tires all the time.

Sure looks like someone tried to slice a tyre. Discount certs handle road hazards but I don't know what they will do with that one if they also conclude it is from vandalism.

Good Luck!

I mean this in nicest way possible, but the 80's owner you sold them to wouldn't have done anything to "get a new tire" out it?

Like 80t0ylc said its a pretty straight and clean cut. I'd be surprised if I found a crack that clean on mine. I believe you said in your other thread these still had good tread left and were not thrashed.

No, I don't think so, the guy I sold them to is a standup regular at Rising Sun. They only had 2K miles are were pretty much new....

Figured so. :) That sucks all the same, good luck.

Both Nay and the guy who bought them are exteremly honest and stand up guys. Some times a pain in the ass :D but their honesty is something I would take to the bank.

:D

So now I have to figure out who is slicing my tires...

That could be road hazard, I hit a piece of HVAC vent/duct metal that left a cut like that. The tire was replaced by road hazard at Discount.

I cant help you with the cause of the slice but my brother had a set of 35 inch toyos and had the same kind of slice on the sidewall looked almost identical to that one. they were to worn down to get any type of warranty for them but still held air so he didn't mind much as it was on a titian that he just drove to work everyday. Maybe theres something to it maybe not take em back and see if this is something that is common with the toyos

If that was the case, don't you think Nay would have noticed hitting the object that sliced his tire like you did? Prolly made a lot of noise didn't it? Not saying it's not possible, but something that would do that to a tire would not be invisible.

Not on a Toyo but on a Revo I had the same sorta slice happen while wheeling. I rubbed up against a slice of slate or some obsidian (very dark and very sharp) that was razor sharp. It instantly slashed the sidewall and the tire collapsed. You may have been "lucky" in the sense that it didn't do damage like that but it is possible that something similar happened on the trail. Another time on the wifey's blizzaks I sliced it similarly with a small section of some sheetmetal that was under some snow. With the weight of our rigs rubbing against something so sharp it isn't impossible to cut through a thick sidewall like that. HTH.

We will never know for certain what happened, however, it appears it was a delibrate cut. You can see that the business end of the object that cut the tire bent and it rode down the sidewall. The deepest cut was in the beginning and middle of the cut on the convex sidewall.

True, everyone should see everything in the road, in real life things are missed, for example a black piece of metal at night. The piece was a relatively small scrap that fell off of a trailer right in front of me, had it been black may have missed it.

One of my Nitto's had a cut at that angle from a trail with tons of steps, Discount said it was cosmetic, not that deep. Angled, curved cuts are easy to get on the trail, sliding off of rocks, steps makes them. I wouldn't assume it's vandalism.

Just to clarify, I threw that out there cause who knows. By all means no offense to Nay or the new owner of the tires :D. Total believer in good cruiser karma ;)
