I justt read a post that included pictures of a 1976 FJ40, which had an AM/FM radio in the dash. I thought that AM/FM radios only became available in 1979 and later? Does anyone for sure when they were available? I am restoring a 1978, and I have both AM as well as AM/FM radios that I can install. i thought to be period correct I needed to use the AM only radio. Any insight in to this? Thanks, JMP

Thanks. I did read some of these threads earlier. It just seems I cannot find anyone that knows for sure, when am/fm first became available as either a factory or dealer installed option. Thanks again. JMP

I have restored my '76 FJ55 and it had an AM only radio. I've since found an AM/FM radio which I'll be using. I'm not too concerned that it be period correct so long as it LOOKS right. A new CD player with all the flashing lights would not look right, an AM/FM that looks the same as the AM is fine by me.

I hear ya, Cruiser_guy. It's just that I thought I had this all figured out and poof, all of a sudden I see that picture with an AM/FM radio in a '76. Thanks for the input. JMP

I once owned a stock, stock 1974 FJ55 w/ a Toyota AM/FM radio. I don't know if it was stereo. It only had one speaker, AFAIK.
Every FJ40 I've ever owned that still had a factory radio, was AM only.:meh:

Land Cruisers and Corollas probably had different options, but my father's '78 2-door Corolla came with an AM/FM radio. Three of the six push-in buttons were for AM stations, and three were for FM. (That car later became my car.)

My employer has a mint 1978 FJ45 with a dealer installed AM /FM radio.
They even managed to install the antenna on the driver side .
