Hello
Wanting to purchase some gears for my LC. It is an automatic HJ60 with stock 4:11. Have on the vehicle 33.10.5/15 tires with a 4 inch lift. What is the best gear ratio 4:56 or 4:88. And yes it goes off road.
Thanks for you input.

i have heard the auto responds well to the 4.88 gears... i have never used them...

Where do you guys need the lower gears with 33 inch tyres?
Ive found the 4.11 ok with the 33s

Maybe I got the lower t/case gears

You MUST have an idea of the tire size that will be in your future. Here is the math you'll need to arm yourself with the propper information.

Speed x R&P x OD Gear x Constant / Tire size = RPM

60 x 4.88 x .770 x 336 / 32 = 2367

60 x 4.56 x .770 x 336 / 32 = 2212

Here is the difference at highway speeds between the gears and the engine
RPM they will commit your truck too.

If Im correct the A440 auto transmission in your truck has a .770 over drive. If it doesnt you must replace that value with the correct overdrive number.

NOTE: Tires almost never measure true to size. Youre 33's arent 33" tall. Probably 31 to 32"

86 hj i will buy your stock 4:11's if you do your gears , i have 33's on right now and have 3:70's , 4:10's would be good for your hj if it was a standard i have also heard 4:56's suit the hj better with the auto , are you going to throw a locker in at the same time , i will be doing a detroit in the rear and leave my front open have you priced out a complete set of gears with lockers parts and labour $$$$$ ouch .

Toynut will sell the 4:11 to you if you want. I purchased a set of 4:88s
Send me your email address.
And to everyone else on the fourm thanks very much for the info....

Good call. A friend of mine had a nice HJ60 and was running 265-75/16s (about 32") with 4.56s and it was pretty close to stock. I think you would have been fine with 4.56s but if you ever decide to go a little bigger you'll be happy you went 4.88s.

FWIW, I have 4.56s in my 70 with 33s and it's about right - but that's with the 5 speed.

I went from 3.70 to 4.11 in my HJ60 with H55 trans with 33" tires. Very happy with how it drives. Diesel motors are all grunt and the magic happens with a very low power band. I had a FJ62 with A440 and 4.88s and 33s. I thought this was too low for a 3FE on the highway, if that was a 2H I think you would be very dissapoited. 4.56 at the most.
