What exactly are we venting here, anyway?

Probably a dumb question. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is but here goes...

What are the front quarter panel and D pillar vents for in our trucks?
My D pillar vents are still in decent shape except for the little flapper panel behind them has broken off and is just rattling around in there. Do I need that flapper at all? I was just gonna yank it so I'd have one less rattle.

Carb fan should be pulling air from the drivers side fender vent. I re-did my D pillar vents about two years go with rubber I found at HD. If sealed correctly, those D pillar vents allow air to escape the cab but will not allow air to enter.

Welp, as this truck has an LM7 now I guess that first bit doesn't matter much.

I could try to make a little flap for the D pillars the same way. Good idea.

If the flapper in the D pillar vent is gone, exhaust will get sucked into the cab under certain window and HVAC positions

For the D pillar vents - Every vehicle is vented like that somehow. If you have the climate blower on and not in "Recirc" (sometimes called MAX A/C) then you're trying to push outside air into the cab so air has to get out to allow this to happen.

I thought the flapper was there for when you shut the doors with the windows up and it lets the compression exhaust out.
I remember watching the vent on my brothers mini truck single cab as it was right next to the door.

Those D pillar vents are there to help the inside of the car breath...closing doors, turning on the AC or heater blower etc all create pressure inside the vehicle and those vents just help to bleed off air inside. They were pretty common on vehicles in the 80's and early 90's....they are still there on modern cars its just that they are much better hidden

So, I thought this was a GREAT idea and I went and found some rubber/vinyl stuff to cut new flappers from. The thing is the flappers are so deteriorated I can't tell how/where/if they attached to the surrounding gasket at all? Surely they didn't just sit in there? Do you have a photo of yours/the originals? I can't find a picture of what they're supposed to look like anywhere.

They are stapled in along the top, the angle of them has the closed if no air is moving. Have someone slam a door with the windows up and you will feel a puff of air.

helpful, but still not completely so. I see only staple holes in the flapper with no indication of where they were staples TO.

Anyone with a photo?

Unscrew the grate, pull out 62904/62903 and locate old staple holes. Cut new, staple & celebrate.

I can appreciate the process but that’s not what I’m confused about. You’re ignoring what I’m saying. There are no staple holes besides the ripped ones in the flaps themselves. I’ve looked and felt all over the other two parts. This image doesn’t show the flap or where it affixes to either the duct or louvers. It’s super weird.

Son. Of. A. Bitch.

Am I to understand the flaps are actually stapled to the interior opening of the duct and not near the exterior opening? I've been trying to figure out where/how they fit or attached to such a large opening. Here's the louvre panel with the old flap on top of it and the new one beside it.

So, I suppose damn things broke loose and then slide down the duct to the outside where I found them and assumed they existed all along?

"pull out 62904/62903 and locate old staple holes."

That was me trying to help, not ignore.

I just took this pic.

Sorry, I musta missed or not understood the “pull out” part as I was looking all over those parts around the exterior opening side and was totally confused as to why there weren’t any staple holes.

Feeling pretty dumb but I had it in my head we were sealing the vent hole and not the inlet.

Works the same way with a flap inside the inlet but I didn’t consider that for some reason.
