welding up the rear (1 Viewer)

I am getting ready to weld my rear up in my 72 FJ40. I was wondering if I have to pull the carrier out of the third, or can I weld it in the third. Also if I have to pull the carrier out, how difficult is this. Can I weld it up with a mig or is it better to use a arc welder. If I do need to use a arc welder, what rod would you reccomend.
