Hi guys, looking to weld the rear of my 87 BJ73, but am trying to find a source for gears... I want to keep mine and have a welded set to swap in for trail trips... Located in Calgary... any suggestions?? 4Wheel Auto?...

thanks very much Wayne... :)

For the cost and potential damage done by welding, you'd be better off to go with a lunch box locker.

nothing wrong with a properly done welded unit.
cost, $50 to do it right.
potential damage?? like what?

for a street rig you will burn through a set of tires quick.
but on the highway or offroad the handling is the same.

there is a learning curve for slippry conditions (i.e. lock the front end in)

not saying a locker isn't a good way to go just running down a lincon locker holds no weight

I'm not running down welded rear ends, I've done many, many of them for people over the years...

In the end, however, quite a few go for installing a locker of some kind after they get tired of the welded rear end. For the nominal cost, a Lock Right (or whatever name of lunch box locker you want) is pretty cheap, has good resale value, and offers better driveability than welded.

As a personal thing, I prefer to drive an open diffed truck off-road and only lock up the axles where needed once driving skill or the vehicle's set up is at its limit.

It does take some to get used to it if you're on the road a lot.

Expect rapid tire wear, stress on the springs and axle shafts, poor steering control in dry conditions on-road, a learning curve in slippery/snowy/wet conditions, lot of odd looks at the local Safeway as you pull in for groceries with tires squealing around the corners...
